About this small amounts make allergies worse

Can anyone explain it to me?

I am not disputing or arguing it, it's just logically I would have thought that small exposure would have made you get used to something...I truly don't understand the sciencey stuff behind why it doesn't do that.

My friend (a biology teacher as well) tried to explain this to me but I still don't get it!

Allergies are caused by an immune response. When your immune system recognised an 'intruder' it goes beserk trying to protect you - causing all the allergy symptoms. The allergy symptoms are directly caused by your immune system, not the allergen itself.

So, when you expose yourself to your allergen regularly, your body recognises it quicker and better than before, hence more symptoms - a greater allergic resonse.

I think that's right.
