My DS1 has been taking sharp intakes of breath now for the past few months. I'm not sure exactly when it started but I seem to recall it was after a bad cold. It's not all the time and some days is hardly noticeable. Seems to be worse when in small spaces like the car. It's like he's gasping for breath during a sentence.

We took him to the doctors who gave him some antibiotics but it's continued.

We also moved house a few months ago so I'm a bit worried it might be the new house or his room that's causing this. Could it be a food allergy?

Obviously I don't want to just ignore it but I reckon the doctor will just say it's mild asthma and send us off. If so who should I go and see? Also what should we do if he had an asthma attack in the meantime? We have no history of allergies/asthma in the family so no idea what an asthma attack would look like.

Any shared experience/knowledge gratefully received.

I'm not qualified to diagnose but from the sound of it your DS needs to see a Dr again . Any breathing difficulties should be seen pretty quickly as they can be serious.

If you think the problem started around when you moved house could dustmites/mould be a problem? Did the previous owners have pets? (the dander/skin flakes can take months to get out of the carpets unless you have an anti-allergy type vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter)
To check if it is something in the house could he stay away for a few days (grandparents/friends) to see if there's any change? (you'd have to make sure his diet stayed exactly the same though)
On the food front you could keep a food diary and write down how his breathing is at various points each day to see if anything tallies.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Thanks for this....we sanded all the floors in the house and then bought a new rug for his room....could it be the fibres in the rug or the dust between the planks?

We went away for Easter for 5 days and it was pretty much the same but not sure if this would be a long enough test?

His cotbed is the same as ever and same bedding. The wall in his room was a little damp when we moved in but it's been fixed and is also lined with that special damp proof paper. No pets previously and no pets now.

Going to keep a diary as you suggest and take him to the doctors again.
