Hello,
My dd has severe allergies to nuts and not so severe to cod and eggs meaning she can be around it just not eat or touch the egg or cod. She's recently started reception and her school is school meals only. Friday is cod day so she cannot have that I asked them what's the alternative and there isn't one they said she basically gets half a hot meal which is wedges and peas or beans and there is a salad cart to choose from, she always come out saying she's really hungry.
My point is can they do this or can I take this further and get them to make her an alternative which she can eat?
Any advice would be great.
Thanks in advance

I'd be concerned about cross-contamination - are the wedges cooked in the same oil as the fish? That's a risky exposure as far as I'm concerned, and would support a case for you to supply lunch on Fridays.

Is it a state school? If so have you looked on the LEA website at the menus? There should always be a vegetarian option.

There are usually two options per day. Or should be. Please go to school and discuss with them how they will ensure your daughter's safety.

Thanks for replying!
I'm going to talk to the head because I know nothing I don't seem to get a straight answer from anyone. On week 1 there is no vegetarian option and week 2 is cheese and tomato wrap which she doesn't eat she cannot stand cheese I've tried everything to get her to eat it bribed her the lot! I do just wish there was a packed lunch option!

I've given up with school dinners half a term in and will be doing packed lunches. Our 'menu' was chicken and potatoes Monday-Thursday and fish and chips on Friday and he wasn't allowed an alternative of jacket potato even if it would have been suitable. How it took their "senior nutritionist" 3 weeks to come up with that I have no idea. I laughed when they sent me the winter menu and I had to sign all the forms again...it was exactly the same menu.

Sorry that was a bit me, me, me! I feel your frustration and you definitely aren't alone. Two of my friends who have children in different schools have also given up with school dinners because the lack of variety meant the kids were either starving because they could only eat half the meal, or they just didn't like the food because it was so bland. I've been told by our provider that the menu is the same for ALL children with allergies, so basically they have a menu that is free from the 15 most common allergens, regardless of whether the child concerned only has 1 allergy.

I've given up with school meals as my dd is dairy soya and egg intolorant and they will not provide food suitable for her. They gave her mash the other day with milk in it. Then pie the next with butter and milk in the pastry. I've put her on a vegan diet to get her the correct products she needs.

My school have been brilliant although while he is on a trial they won't cook him anything extra that's not already been cooked that day. It has been hinted that if he is put on sucrose free diet permanently they may cook him extra food. I've been advised to talk to the councils catering manager to discuss my concerns. Maybe that'd work for you?
