Snot is making DS's life miserable, now being teased. "Nothing" works.

DS2 (just 8 yrs old) has extreme dust allergies. This only started 2 years ago, but nothing helps.

We are as consistent as possible with nighttime antihistamines (only type works a teeny bit but has sedative effect), saline, nasal spray, etc etc. Air filter in bedroom, stripped out carpets, special bedding.

The whole f'ing shooting match.

Doesn't seem to be making any big difference. He is getting through boxes of tissues, and now it seems he's starting to feel very sensitive at school, lots of comments from others"eww" not happy.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I suffered for years as a child, the only thing that finally sorted it for me was a steroid nasal spray which I've used for 35 years now

Have you looked at his diet? It took till my 40's for a final diagnosis of coeliac disease which had caused massive auto immune responses including multiple anaphylactic allergies.

Dairy is a common mucus producing problem which is also involved with glue ear

lborgia · 16/08/2017 22:34

Thanks Schrod, I just had then add dairy to his last allergy test and I did come up, but they didn't seem interested to compared to the huge lumps from the dust mite tests.

Maybe I should find out about an exclusion diet. He's a picky eater so it's going to be tough but thank you.

It might be worthwhile looking into the salt cave if there is one near you or having an appointment with a reflexologist.

Schroedingerscatagain · 16/08/2017 22:43

House dust mites is where it all started for me as a baby, it took 42 years to get all my allergies sorted due to the hidden coeliac disease

Just a quick thought, is he sleeping with a teddy etc near his face? Do you know about putting them in the freezer to kill the mites off

I'm sure you've done all the right things honestly I got no freedom till I started the steroid nose spray at 13 and I still have break through rhinitis with seasonal pollen overlay of tree pollens, mould spores

lborgia · 17/08/2017 00:01

He has a steroid spray, but I might need to get some advice on using it because I haven't seen any real change. . I just read last night that you're supposed to wait 10 minutes between saline spray and steroid. ..which I didn't know!

Will look up salt cave! Can reflexology work on small children? Or for allergies? Or do you mean for clearing his sinuses specifically? Thanks for the ideas.

I was very cynical about the salt cave and reflexology but also feeling desperate and concerned about the antibiotics being prescribed. Salt cave: I was gifted 2 sessions to try and help my ongoing sinusitis - The 1st session I spent a very pleasant hour but wouldn't have gone back as I didn't feel I had any benefit. The 2nd session noticed a huge difference. I ended up doing a course of treatments and have the occasional top up now. I had 4 courses of antibiotics for my sinusitis the year before I did the treatment and none since. My eczema has virtually gone as an added bonus. The Salt cave has sessions for children. I don't know where you live or if they are close enough for you to use.
Reflexology - attended for other reasons but she also treats my sinusitis. I was rather cynical about reflexology before I tried it. I think the biggest problem would be the child sitting still for an hour while she worked on his feet! But if it's going to help child might be very receptive.
My experience with the salt cave has encouraged me to put Himalayan salt lamps in our bedroom and the living room. We have also purchased for elderly relatives and there has been a reduction in chest problems. I'm full aware the jury is out on Himalayan salt lamps so can only relay our experience of using them. The other half has stopped snoring since we put it on in our bedroom! We have purchased them for our daughters to have. Happy to answer any other questions about my experience. Sorry this is so long.

Thank you so much, sorry I didn't come straight back - busy with snot Grin.

I'm very much of the "I don't care how it works, as long as it works" school, so am happy to give it a go.

DS will go with anything at this stage, even loads of prick tests being duplicated yesterday after only having it done 2 weeks ago... and we're looking at immunotherapy even though that is a three year process. Looked up and we have a salt cave nearby and it has a kids room with PlayStation!!! Wonder if it rusts quickly? Anyway, will give it a go.

Thanks again!

Not sure if you can use a nasal wash on small child but that is what helped when I suddenly became allergic to dust a few years ago.
I have since been diagnosed coeliac so there may be a link as pp said.

mypoornips · 13/09/2017 17:13

I would also think about coeliac disease. I had rhinitis (I do have a dust allergy also) but it improved massively once I was diagnosed in my mud 30's. same is true for my mum & sibling.

ewemum · 13/09/2017 17:22

Using a nasal saline rinse has helped me - Sterimar. Especially in the summer with hay fever. There is also a sinus rinse available from chemists over the counter.
