Nutramagin- baby seems worse on it than normal formula!

Hello! I've posted a few messages on here as I'm getting used to formula feeding and consequently, dealings with nutramagin!

My DD (6weeks old) started showing signs of CMPA 1 week after switching to formula. She didn't tolerate normal formula well (constipation/fussiness) so we switched to apranil confort. Then a week later had blood in her stools. Not blobs of blood, but a wine coloured stain to the whole poo, and circling it if that makes sense! This lasted for 3-4 days then eased and gradually stopped at about 2.5 weeks after starting formula. Other signs we saw were rash on face and very explosive nappies. So we were refereed to consultants who prescribed nutramagin. We started this yesterday and my baby has been sooo unhappy on it. Much more so than on normal formula. She is fussy after a feed, sick frequently (she's had 4-5 outfit changes already today) and still struggling and straining with her poos which are no less explosive. I also feel the skin rash seems worse (when it has actually been improving). I understand it will take a while for a formula change to settle, but is this normal?? I really want to stop as I was dubious about an allergy in the first place but now feel all her symptoms are much worse and want to stop. DH says we need to give it time. I wld call the consultants but I've now left it too late in the day.

If anyone has any experiences/advice I'd love to hear. Thanks x

Nutramigen makes my DD really ill (diagnosed with CMPI) we are on Aptamil Pepti and it's brilliant she's a different child. I would go back to your doctor and explain, they should offer you a different formula, it's trial and error what works for each baby IME. That said their poos are definitely not the standard mustardy baby poo when on special formulas. The rash and vomiting should absolutely improve when you find a formula that works. Interestingly my DDs paediatric dietician said lots of people struggle with nutramigen. Hope you find something that works soon!

My son was allergic to something in Nutrimigen. They thought I was crazy and put me on antidepressants as I was clearly looking for something to be wrong with my baby. Eventually DH said to stop giving it to him, and he stopped vomiting.

Make sure you don't get the same treatment I did. Ask for something else x

Thank you stupidslimygit (great name but feel bad calling you that 😂) I will deffo speak to doc about a different formula. He was really nice so hope it won't be a battle! Just wish it wasn't Friday - don't want to wait till Monday 😖

Oh god monsterqueen how awful I'm so sorry! I'm hoping this is not happening to DD! If it continues I will put my foot down and tell DH we must go back to normal formula at least until Monday when I can speak to doc.

My son is nearly 5 now and has grown out of all his allergies. He is the picture of health 😊

Lucinda15 · 21/07/2017 18:41

Thanks monsterqueen - I have a 5yo who also had allergies and now outgrown ☺️ Which is reassuring! I was able to breastfeed him for 10 months so never had this issue with formula. Heartbreakingly I haven't been able to breastfeed my daughter... and so now am faced with this horrible formula saga! I've been very sad about it all and trying to let go of the guilt but I've been struggling with it.

Anyway! DD is screaming the house down and DH reckons we just need to give the nutramagin a chance... I want to stop straight away, and he reckons she is hungry and is giving her more in between the screams! Someone tell me he is nuts?? Is he right or should I put my foot down and go back to normal formula (aptamil comfort) until I can discuss with doc on Monday?

Haha, thankyou. Don't worry my name was in reference to someone I made a thread about not me! Grin
I was heartbroken about not being able to breastfeed aswell but someone said to me the other day it's not that you've failed, it's that you have recognised it isn't working and put your daughters health above what you want to do. Helps me a little to think of it that way don't know if it might you? Either way, you have nothing to be guilty for at all. (should take my own advise there!)
My younger brother had several severe allergies as a child (actually admitted to hospital with a collapsed lung twice caused by his allergies, dropped from 90th centile to 12th, running weeping eczema etc) and now he is 19 you wouldn't ever know he had been such a sickly child. He can eat almost anything he wants including small amounts of his allergens and is 6ft6! Honestly although it can be scary when they are tiny most grow out of it by the time they are adults if not children. It's very common.
If you think she's worse on the Nutramigen absolutely stop giving it her and talk to a doctor Monday.

Swizzlegiggle · 21/07/2017 21:46

DD was on Nutramigen for awhile and it made her no better. Eventually she was prescribed Neocate which her body was able to tolerate. It did take a month or so of trying different formulas before we found the right one. If it's making your DD ill though I would take her straight back to the drs on Monday and explain that it's not working for her.

Lucinda15 · 22/07/2017 09:12

Thanks everyone. Things got pretty bad last night and DH finally admitted the nutramagin was no good for her and we went back to the comfort. She almost immediately calmed down and slept amazingly well, I think she was exhausted. I will discuss with the docs asap on Monday. I'm not entirely convinced she has an allergy, surely the comfort would be troubling her more than the nutramagin?

Has anyone tried nanny care? My mum has bought us a tin but I'm scared to chop and change...
