6 week old with eczema

Hi mumsnetters, I'm a first time mum and a first time mumsnetter so please excuse any school girl errors on here!
My 6 week old has been diagnosed with eczema. As a first time mum I am beside myself with worry. Does not help that the Dr told me that LOs with eczema that develops early (e.g. 6 week mark) have a higher likelihood of food allergies later on. I breast feed with an occasional small (70ml) top
Up of formula. Can anyone enlighten me on their experiences? Did they have this with their LO at an early age and go on to see food allergies develop? Did the LO grow out of the eczema?
Really interested in hearing people's stories of how LOs who had eczema diagnosed very early ended up .

Can't help with the link to further allergies sorry but has the GP said why they think LO has ezcema? Do they have any other symptoms?

My GP is rubbish. Just asked if me or DH had a history of eczema or food allergies- which we don't. LO is otherwise pretty content - no other symptoms/ issues .

I can't help specifically with early onset eczema but I've had it all my life and just wanted to check you'd excluded all other causes than dietary ones. So, baths with water only, no creams (other than prescribed by GP), non bio laundry soap, cotton wool and water or cloth wipes for nappy changes? I had terrible rashes as a baby and only very very occasional flares as an adult. Also no food allergies or asthma despite eczema, hay fever and pet allergies. So nothing is a given!

Both my DCs developed eczema as babies. My DD still has flair ups in the crease of her arms but easily managed with a cream and steroid cream regime. She has no asthma or food allergies.
My DS suffers occasional flair ups around his neck but we discovered that tomatoes seem to cause the flare ups so we avoid those and any food containing them. He has never had an allergy test. He also developed asthma but that wasn't a surprise because all males on my side suffer from it.

Hi, as you probably know, every baby is different. But sadly for us my boys eczema,from being a few weeks old, did lead to a nut and egg allergy. He was EBF and there are no food allergies in the family. He's 2 now and we found out at aged 19/20 months so still fairly new to us.
This may not be the case for tou though, but best to be aware I'd say.

Mine had eczema but got no other allergies and grew out of it. Hope this is the case for you.

40% of infant eczema will be due to food allergy. Most commonly cows milk protein allergy.
Still a higher chance that it is just eczema particularly if She has no other symptoms.

Eczema before 6 months old is usually linked to an allergy. In your case I would suspect the formula.
My DS also had occasional formula top ups and developed horrendous eczema. Turned out he was allergic to cows milk. Cutting it out was the only thing that helped, and we had tried every cream the GP could prescribe.

My DD1 was covered from head to toe with eczema at 8 weeks. It was horrible but soon improved with emollients twice a day, a change to fragrance-free washing powder and no bubbles in the bath.

She carried on with eczema in creases, under her ears, etc for a few years but has very few problems with it now.

She was allergic to eggs and lactose intolerant for a while but grew out of them too. I did have to avoid eggs while BFing for the first year or so but she became less sensitive so I was able to start eating them again by the time she was a year old.

DS had infant eczema. Very severe. Grew out of it totally by age 3. No allergies.

Yes eczema & allergies are linked & my consultant told me 6 weeks is the 'flare time' but DD broke out with eczema at 6 weeks 2 days old. Confirmed diary & egg allergy.

I would ask for a paediatric referral & whilst you are waiting you could always cut out diary from your diet to see if that shows an improvement.

I & my partner suffer no food allergies but I suffer asthma & hay fever which is under the 'allergy umbrella'.

Pretty sure my dd had eczema that early. In fact, she was permanently covered in some kind of rash. She has a peanut allergy and has had weird reactions to a number of other foods..

Thanks for your responses. I kept going to see GP and not getting much joy.
Finally went to see (privately) a paediatrician who specialises in eczema and food allergies. So I’m now off eggs milk and soy whilst BF. I also now have a treatment plan for my boy’s eczema and a plan for weaning him. Exhausting! But glad to be on the right track. Now need to sit out the NHS waiting list to see the Dr in St Marys Hospital (does anyone know how long the list is? I’ve heard 4-5 months)

Hi OP I’m an adult who had very bad eczema as a child - went on an elimination diet, socks on hands at night etc
I found many things that helped me as a child and now as an adult where ie mostly grown out of it other than flare ups
