We are thinking of going abroad next year for a special birthday but one of the family has a milk allergy and I have no idea where to stay. We are going for Easter so would like to go somewhere warm. Any suggestions?

A proper allergy or an intolerance?

I have the latter so the consequences of getting it wrong are unpleasant but not potentially fatal. I've travelled widely and just learned the local phrase for "does it have any milk products in? I cannot eat them". Asia is probably easiest though as most local dishes don't use milk products.

Our son had a milk allergy and we did self catering in a villa - we could eat out every now and again but cooking/bbqs ourselves guaranteed no problems.

Sorry, should have said, its non-Ige. Sadly, I don't think the budget will stretch to Asia, but thanks anyway Smile

My son has a dairy and egg allergy, we find europe is doable with allergies (we did have a 'we are allergic to.... ' written in the language of the country) but they have the same laws as us - the top 14 allergies have to be listed/the resturants need to have their allergy menu up to date.
We have also been to Singapore and had no issues as they dont really consume dairy.

I'm beginnig to think a villa or apartment might be the way to go. Has anyone ever had a successful hotel stay?

My son has a milk allergy and we hired a self catered apartment in Lanzarote. We ended up being able to eat out a lot as there is very little dairy in the food there (possibly something to do with the expense of having to import milk products?). He ate fish every day and we were able to get hold of milk alternatives in the supermarket. The island is beautiful too!

We have stayed in France and Spain on holiday but not in hotels. One was a casa and the other was a Eurocamp holiday so self catering.
We did have allergy cards ordered from Allergy UK which listed dd's allergies. They are clearly worded and we used them in restaurants when eating out, we would always check the menu first for possible dishes they could eat and kept it simple. So the children usually ate steak frites or ham and olives.

Self-catering is the most straightforward thing to do! Less risky.
