Can you have intolerance to tomatoes?

DS2 age 9 has always been a bit unreliable in the poo department. Often it happens so quickly that he cannot get to the toilet in time (although only at home, which makes us feel there is an element of control in this). We have been through avoiding milk but that made little difference. However, I have noticed there are immediate problems if he eats baked beans or anything tomato based. Is this a recognised intolerance?

Yes - it's quite common I think.

happystory · 21/03/2007 13:38

Yes child at our pre-school with an allergy as in they bring her out in a rash

Whoooosh · 21/03/2007 13:39

My dd is similar with tomatoes-also allergic to anything in the onion family which of course makes cooking a complete joy

Hillary · 21/03/2007 13:41

Yes my cousins allergic to cucumber, my mother - pepper You can be allergic to anything.

Twiglett · 21/03/2007 13:42

yes tomatoes are

tends to go hand in hadn with nightshades

malaleche · 21/03/2007 13:42

yes, they belong to the deadly nightshade family along with aubergines and potatoes

DumbledoresGirl · 21/03/2007 13:43

Absolutely. In my MIL's case, they exacerbate her arthritis. So i can well believe they have things in them that could upset people.

Twiglett · 21/03/2007 13:43

"Potatoes, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, tomatillos, tamarios, pepinos, pimentos, paprika, cayenne, and Tabasco sauce are classified as nightshade foods. A particular group of substances in these foods, called alkaloids, can impact nerve-muscle function and digestive function in animals and humans, and may also be able to compromise joint function. Because the amount of alkaloids is very low in nightshade foods when compared with other nightshade plants, health problems from nightshade foods may only occur in individuals who are especially sensitive to these alkaloid substances. Since cooking only lowers alkaloid content of nightshade foods by about 40-50%, highly sensitive individuals may want to avoid this category of food altogether"

Cappuccino · 21/03/2007 13:43

yes

tomatoes in same family as potatoes, peppers, aubergine as well

tis a bit of a nightmare family to avoid tho

I have posted a recipe before for a beetroot based sauce to make pizza/ spag bol etc with so if you do struggle let me know and I'll hunt round for the link

Sherbert37 · 21/03/2007 14:01

Oh.My.Goodness!! Thought we were beyond looking at lists of ingredients and supermarket shopping taking three times as long. This does make a lot of sense. Can't bear to go back to the soppy dietician who was really no help at all but looks as if we may be heading that way again. Will they do tests to ascertain intolerances now he is older, as last time (pre-school) they wouldn't as they were deemed unreliable? Tis a nightmare doing exclusion diets with five of us.

Both DH and DS have tomato intolerance. Very trying as I love pasta & tom sauce.

Don't know if they'll test for them as I think it's only true allergies that they test for (and those results are unpredictable at best too). Probably just best to exclude toms and see how you go. Mightbe easier to go tomato-free as a family than start to think about cooking separately.

chloesmumtoo · 22/03/2007 13:03

Yes my dd is allergic to tomatoes and peppers! Very hard. Cappuccino you were a life saver without knowing it to us lol. We found your thread on that sauce and I have made it once already. My dd is sensitive to carrots also so I have to use all butternut squash but it works. I freeze it into ice cubes and defrost some to make my dd's pizza's now every week. She loves them.

chloesmumtoo · 22/03/2007 13:08

Yeah at the moment we all eat the same as a family. Even with all dd's intolerances but there comes a stage where you do start to wonder if the families missing out on important vitamins ect because of avoiding certain foods. Mind you cooking is so time consuming that I think it would be a complete nightmare trying to cook twice. Now we are all healthier because of her in the way of no premade prepacked foods! We probably are better off just eating the same after all.

iris66 · 23/03/2007 19:29

Cappuccino - please please post your recipe (my DS has a nightshade intolerance) I've searched but it's not coming up anywhere. Huge thanks in advance

staceym11 · 23/03/2007 19:40

my dd gets brought out in a rash and has 'loose' bowel movements shall we say?

think its quite common!

twentypence · 23/03/2007 19:50

I don't think you can reliably allergy test for tomato - and anyway the very cause and effect bowel motions kind of mean you don't really need a test.

Tomato makes me very tired - like curl up in a ball and have an afternoon sleep tired. So I don't eat it.

A glass of wine (or even a handful of grapes)would send me to the toilet 5 minutes after consuming, with my mum it's an orange. I guess most people develop a dislike to foods that have such an instant effect.

chloesmumtoo · 26/03/2007 13:31

Iris66 = to find the thread on chandra's tom free sauce click on search for messages. Then type in - for anyone with tomato intolerances. Should come up for you then.

MegaLegs · 26/03/2007 13:34

My DS1 (7) has outgrown all his food allergies except tomatoes. Raw tomatoes cause extreme stomach cramp and severe runs in about 10 mins from eating them. He can eat them cooked though.

chloesmumtoo · 26/03/2007 13:34

oh and put her name in where it says find messages by nickname ect.........
