Cub scout camping weekend and epi-pen

DS (10yrs) is toying with going to cub camp for the first time later this year. He's very active and outgoing so that part will suit him down to the ground but he's worried about allergies. There's a fair chance he'll not eat much if he's not confident that adults aren't checking his food. Although he's fine with stodgy like cooked breakfasts and barbecues, I'll doubt they'll be eating much fruit or nuts anyway Hmm.

Has anyone sent a child off to cub camp with an epi-pen? Did you send special food with them?

Can't help on the experience of sending a child with allergies but I am a leader with beavers & cubs and we never have a camp without a variety of allergies within the group. We often have 50+ children and can guarantee there will be at least one child for each coeliac/halal meat/dairy free/nut free and it is never a problem to cater for them safely. Discuss with his leaders for some reassurance and to make sure they are aware what to check for when food shopping (they honestly won't take offence! My OH is coeliac and unless I'd come across it through him I wouldn't realise exactly what to check for! We are all volunteers and do it to give the children a good time and are happy to learn about these things 😊) and ask to see the menu beforehand to reassure you and your son that all will be okay. Hope I've been some help

Ah, thank you. That's really helpful actually Smile.

Now you've mentioned it I realise he won't be the only one either.

DS has done loads of cub and scout camps including both local group and massive county wide ones and never had a problem. The leaders are great and very aware - they've also been excellent in supporting him transitioning to more independence with his epipen etc as well. When he first started in cubs and then again in scouts I went in and spoke with the leaders and also sent them an email with all the details and it's been fine.
