DD2 (6) has a bad reaction to sun cream (eyes swell up) - what to try?

Every year dd2 reacts to sun cream (I've tried Nivea, Soltan, Tesco, Boots) if I put it on her face - her eyes get sore, and swollen. She's OK with it on her body, but we've just had to make sure she always wears a hat as her eyes have reacted to everything we've tried. Telling her not to rub her eyes doesn't work, I think when she sweats a tiny bit of the cream runs into them and makes them sore, and then she rubs them and makes it worse.

This year, she's playing an outdoor sport where no-one else wears a hat and she would look different (and a bit silly, she feels) if she did. So I need to come up with something I can put on her face. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My DS has had some success with the Lloyds chemist own brand childrens' stuff. He gets very itchy with most of the main-stream stuff.

I was hospitalised over my reaction, but have been Ok with piz brun lotion.

I have found both of us are better with lotions rather than creams. I am still trying to pluck up the courage to try the Nivea clear spray stuff. It would be so much easier if the whole family could use the same stuff rather than having to take 3 different varieties on holiday!

What about a day cream with sun protection in it? Maybe one for sensitive skin?
How old is she?

We've been licky with Jason.

My dd has been sensitive to sun cream every year and the best we have found is one in a white bottle from Aldi. Cheap as chips and the only one that hasn't come up with a reaction.

Ds2 gets a rash with most creams but is ok with Sunsense toddler milk (SPF 50)

We've had the same issue & the only one that didn't flare DDs skin up badly was Soltan Baby, Sensitive we used Banana Boat Sensitive when abroad & lost our usual one once, that turned out to be good too & their Aloe Vera after sun was great too

For my dd (who reacts to suncream), I use a Simple facial moisturiser which has a sunscreen in. The one I use is an SPF 15 but I think they may do an SPF 30 one.

The white zinc based stuff worked for my DD after reacting to several more oil based ones. The factor 50 baby Sainsbury's one was cheapest & best we discovered. I dread if they re-formulate it. I test them in store if they "soak in" nornally oil ones if they stay white & sit on top of skin more they seem to be more zinc like.

IfNotDuffers · 02/05/2017 18:50

Thanks, that's a lot to try. I'm not sure whether sunscreen moisturiser would be better as it would sink in, or whether the zinc stuff would be better as it wouldn't run into her eyes.

Has anyone had the eyes reacting, rather than the skin? She doesn't get eczema or anything (though she does get hayfever), so I think it's very much an eye thing rather than a skin thing.

My dd suffers issues with suncream, for a long time she just could not use them. However, we have used with success Boots Soltan Kids sensitive (states: reduces the risk of skin allergies) Ultra light suncare lotion dermatologist approved.50+
We do tend to wash them off as soon as we can and only use when really needed but dd has seemed to get on with it. Boots are pretty good as they say if we have any problem bring it back-same with the make ups. Dd has anaphylaxis to peanuts/pollen/dust allergies, multiple food allergies/drug allergies/ eczema/asthma ect. Has suffered swollen eyes in the past but that was to a make up.
The only thing dd moans about it is that it has a funny smell.

I have lots of skin allergies and can't use any of the cream ones. I use the banana boat sprays now. Used to use p20.

Hey!

Did you manage to find any suncream that doesn’t make your babies eyes swell
up? I am having the same problem with my 9 month old!
