How long can you use hydrocortisone for?

We've been using it on the advice of the doctors since Christmas time for DD's eczema. We average once a day sometimes we go once every other day but I'm worried that we're using it too much. Dr. didn't seem concerned about us using it long term but I guess they wouldn't. Anyone had any advice not to use it for extended periods?

Thanks IG (great name)

Tibsy, haven't tried dairy yet. Was going to try and avoid it if possible but might have a test of something like cheese to see if there is any reaction because it would be good to have if she could. Also want to introduce some formula so I can get a break so might give a bit of that. I think I'll avoid the yoguart until she takes a spoon because I'm not sure I can cope with the mess.

Indefinately you can even use it on the face although it says not in the advice - if it's not working there are other stronger preparations available from a dermatologist.

Is epaderm an over the counter cream or prescription? Do you get oilatum on prescription or buy it?

Hi
My DS2 was prescribed hydrocortisone and we were told that we should use it on the affected areas on his face but to avoid near the eyes. Have also been prescribed Oilatum for the bath (also available over counter), used Epiderm with DS1. Been recommended that I try Diprobase, (available on prescription or over counter £2.50 tube) and it's wonderful. Works a treat. Personally think it's better than all the others I tried. Put it on him 3 times a day and hardly ever have to use hydrocortisone.

In answer to the OP we have used steroid cream for 3 years and now use it everyday just to keep DD1s ankles under control. Same advice re skin thinning being minimal and scratching damage worse - saying that she still scratches til she bleeds.

On the other subject of weaning foods. DD1 was much worse after I introduced formula IMO and as a result DD2 was exclusively bf though she is fine with cow's milk now (nearly 1). I'm continuing to bf tho as I believe it is beneficial - she has no eczema at all which may of course just be down to luck. When we weaned DD1 there were several foods that aggravated her skin. Eggs made her bleedwhen eaten but most other things were on a contact basis. They are the usual suspects and we have not cut them from her diet but do take some steps tominimise contact. For instance strawberries and kiwi she does not eat with her hands. Same for hummus. I guess you are doing BLW with your DD (I did second time and it's fab) so I would just watch out the first time you try these foods. Hummus can go in a sandwich though. Agree about the yog altho I did use to load up a spoon and give it to her - stick with cheese for now but don't get hung up on the amount of dairy if you are still bfing.

I'm suprised that no-one has mentioned Aveeno yet as it's very popular as a moisturisor.

Hope her eczema clears soon.....we are hoping for the 7 year window having missed the 2 yearold one!!

sorry ladies, am jumping into the debate a bit late ... but I agree with gingerninja that shea butter might be worth a try as it's a fantastic moisturiser which has worked a treat on the dry, itchy areas my baby daughter has behind her knees. It also shifted the chronic cradle cap she had as a newborn.(Olive oil and numerous lotions and potions prescribed by the doc and HV wouldn't shift it but shea butter quickly did!) I can also recommend an Australian product called Hope's Relief cream - I found it a great natural alternative to using steroid cream. Good luck trying!!!
