Bump

Don't have any first hand knowledge for you but DH has coeliac disease and I know that Italy is supposed to be quite Coeliac friendly. I think I am right in saying that they give children routine blood tests and so they pick up a lot of Coeliacs who would otherwise go undiagnosed.
You could look at glutenfree
There is lots of info on the supplementary board (button at top of board and you can ask direct questions - lots of knowledge on there.

hi elc, it's a tricky one...coeliac disease in italian is celiachia.
it's tricky because main italian dishes pizza/pasta/focaccia are obviously a no no for you. all italian pharmacies sell producs for coeliac disease sufferers and also the big supermarkets (like coop or esselunga). I'm pretty sure that some bakery shops are now making croissants and pizza that are made for people with coeliac disease. However, I don't know what is the situation like in florence. you can certainly ask your brother to have a special menu for you (like risotto). sorry I can't be of much help!

A friend of mine who is coeliac got married in Italy herself. She had no problems with food at all - for every pasta dish, they were able to provide her a gluten-free version, so nobody could even tell her food was different.

elc...are you a member of coeliac UK? They give you a little card which explains wht your dietary restrictions are and you can order them in dofferent languages. also, the GF pasta that I but in Sainsbury's is actually made in Italy, so there must be an awareness of it. Click Here to join Coeliac UK. good luck
