Once again - MMR and allergy to eggs

Hi all,
My DS had blood tests to diagnose his allergies and we found out he's very allergic to eggs (14.3). He's 18 months and I've been postponing the MMR. Now that I have the results, I'm even more afraid for him to have it. Some of you who encountered the same problem, what did you do? any advice will be greatly apprecialted.
Thanks

Hi debliz5. My ds also has an egg allergy with a result of 4.75 which although it is not as high a result as your ds's, it is still quite a severe allergy and is in the "very high levels" category of results. Just touching egg will bring him out in hives. Anyway, we are just back from the hospital after his MMR. We had to wait around on the ward for an hour afterwards as a precaution and he is absolutely fine. I just have to keep an eye on him over the next 24 hours which you would do routinely anyway after any vaccination. DS's cousin had the same allergy and again had no problem whatsoever with the MMR. So, there, a scientific poll of two children I was more concerned about risking him catching M, M or R tbh.
HTH

BTW the MMR vaccine doesn't actually contain egg, however the flu and yellow fever vaccines do, so your ds would be unable to have those.

Thanks mawbroon. I'm happy to hear your ds is fine . Here (Amsterdam), they just try to assure me that everything will be ok. They won't do it in hospital...

I would have been perfectly happy for them to have done his MMR at the normal clinic at the health centre tbh. My reasoning behind this was that if something awful happened, then they would have adrenalin in the surgery as well as antihistimines. In fact, I had discussed it with the HV and she was happy to do it as well, but she had to ok it with the GP. It was the GP who said no and when I saw the consultant, she said that GPs are overly cautious about it for some reason.
It's a worry for you whether you get it done or not, isn't it!

So no "patat met" for your ds then?

my dd2 had her MMR at the hospital when she was 20 months old...it was a bit scary because they drew up the adrenalin and a steroid at the same time as the MMR "just in case"...we had to wait on the ward for 4 hours with checks taken every 5 mins, then every 10, then every half hour...she was absolutely fine. The hospital took a long time to decide whether to do it at hospital or at the GPs because the risk of a reaction is very very very rare and most drs are happy to do the vaccine at their surgeries, they just need to be able to give a shot of adrenalin if necessary

My DS also has severe egg allergy and I did not give him the MMR. We were debating what to do when he developed measles. We took him to hospital cos he was pretty bad and the A&E sister having heard my concerns said we had done the right thing as she had seen kids in A&E who were much worse that DS due to allergic reaction to MMR. Having said that DS is highly allergic to several things and had had a bad reaction to the DPT which was also worrying us.

It's so difficult.

My DS had his in the hospital (because the GP wouldn't do it in the surgery) and was absolutely fine he was 4 btw and this was his booster - we didn't find out about the egg allergy until he had already had the first one.

Ooo I'm all confused now - the consultant at the allergy clinic told us that MMR isn't egg based anymore so Heather will have the jab as normal at my GP surgery.

my DD has an egg allergy
apparently the MMR is no longer egg-based (it used to be)
however many GPs still don't like to do it on allergic children and prefer the hospital to do it
my DD is having hers in hospital next month, even though the hospital insisted it wasn't necessary and that the GP was "being silly". My GP told me they would say this, but that he would just be happier.
so i insisted, and she is having it in hosp. In my area (w london) i think they are just grateful you are having the MMR at all as uptake is low. Tell them it is in hospital or not at all if you are worried, then see how quickly they do it!!

It's so weird that we are all getting different messages - DD2 is nearly 1 and round here they do MMR just after the first birthday so I'll be getting my appointment soon and I'm not sure what to do. TBH if it's safe I'd rather spend 10 mins at the GP close to home than spend a morning in hospital but DD2 is quite allergic - came out in bad hives after I picked up an egg shell then touched her face.
