Nut allergy video 'The New Kid' - free

I have a video produced by The Anaphylaxis Campaign entitled 'The New Kid' that I no longer need as my son who has a nut allergy is older now and understands his allergy. It helps younger children to understand their allergy and how to cope with situations like birthday parties. I am happy to post it free of charge to any Mum who could use this to help their child with a nut allergy.

Vernon, I'm not going to ask for it because we have already got something from you but, I would like to thank you again for the books you sent to us last year. We have put them to good use, they have helped DS to understand why we go into so much detail and to participate in the process, and also to find out he is not the only one.

I have been thinking a lot about you. DS's birthday party was yesterday, and I was wondering if there is a book your DS would like to have, we would like to send him something in apreciation for the donation of his books

I would love this video - my young one is 20mths old. Where did you get the books from? They sound great too.

Vernon · 25/02/2007 19:21

Dear Chandra,I'm really pleased the books are so useful, no need to send a book to my son, it's nice for him to know that other children are learning how to stay safe. Congratulations on the birthday.I'll let the other lady have the video to be fair, but it is available from the charity www.anaphylaxis.org.uk, it's called 'The New Kid'. My email is [email protected] if you think I could help you with any allergy concerns, my son has had the allergy for 9 years now. Take care, Linda

Message for CHANDRA. The other lady did not send me her address, would you still like the video? Email me your address to [email protected] if you would like it.
Thanks, Linda

Thanks Vernon, I really would not like to abuse your generosity, so bumping this thread in case someone else may be interested. I will e-mail you if nobody has replied in the next few days. Would that be OK?

Oh can I ask a question?
My ds has been carrying an epi pen for nearly 2 years now for a peanut allergy and I was just wondering how strict you are about the different levels of nut warnings e.g. nuts used elsewhere in the factory, recipe no nuts, cannot guarentee ingredients etc and also how strict will ds be when he is older and it is his choice?

Also will anyone assess ds again ,he is 3 now or is that it?

Vernon · 22/03/2007 15:54

Hi Chandra, thanks - I have been sent an address now, so I will post the video to that person. You are kind to let someone else have the video. Best wishes, Linda

Hi Berrie, I'm sure the testing changes from region to region, but my son was tested every 18 mths, skin and RAST tests, by the allergy clinic at our local hospital. They stopped testing when he was 9 years old as they consider it unlikely for him to grow out of the allergy after this age.

As regards, which labels to follow, I think it comes down to what you are comfortable with. I am probably too over cautious, so will not buy anything that says 'can not guarantee nut-free' or 'made in a factory that handles nuts'. Just my choice though, others may be more relaxed.

Hope this is helpful, sorry it's vague. However, a word of encouragement is that I found the allergy much easier to manage from about 6 onwards as he became more responsible and it was easier to relax a bit about him being in social situations.

Best of luck,

Linda

Thanks Vernon. I suppose I was wondering about when they guarentee the factory and the recipe but not the ingredients.

We were told there would be a follow up appointment in a year after the initial diagnosis but when I rang they said I'd had a 6 month open appointment which had obviously lapsed.

We have a lot of questions now that we just wouldn't have asked at the time when it was all new.

Oh...also do you have any subsequent children and did you get them tested?

Chandra · 22/03/2007 17:31

Berrie, no need for testing other kids unless they have had a reaction as allergies can develop at any age. The only thing that I can say is that if you have already allergies in the family it would be best to follow all guidelines to the letter (or even for longer than suggested). The last time I checked I think it was to avoid nuts during the first 3 years where allergies existed in the family and 5 years for those with relatives with nut allergies. HTH

Vernon, glad somebody has got it , now I have a perfect excuse to contribute to the Anaphylaxis Campaign by buying them from them
