Did prescription formula make things worse at first?

I feel like going on a trial was the wrong decision. My ds has been much worse the two days he's been on pepti junior.
To top it all he's drinking less that when he was on anti reflux milk and once again vomiting.
I can't imagine putting us all through this for two to four weeks. How long would you leave it before throwing in the towel?

Any experiences much appreciated!
Tia

How old is he? What meds was is on? Every change makes is worse from what I remember.

It might also be that he doesn't like the taste and/or consistency and that he is fighting the bottle, yet at the same time hungry hence swallowing lots of air at the same time.

When DS2 was diagnosed with reflux, this NZ website helped me loads www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz.

He is still taking all his meds, isn't he? Did you also start weaning? This made things a lot worse for a while.

He is 16.5 weeks and we haven't changed anything else yet. He's on omeprazole and was on anti reflux milk. His reflux symptoms were manageable but he was suffering with terrible digestive discomfort, gas, and diarrhoea or constipation.
All his reflux symptoms have returned since he came off the thickened milk. I've been adding carobel but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Try doing the opposite, instead of adding carabel, try to dilute the milk more and of course you will need to compensate with bigger bottles to have the same amount of calories.

As I was saying, with weaning, things got a lot worse exactly the opposite if what you would expect, it's thicker hence it stays down. I discover that thick wasn't good at all, so instead of the typical puree I would do very watery soups.

DS2 was on lanzoprazole and BFed and still vomiting daily. Gas and diarrhoea might not be linked to his anti reflux milk, but the reflux full stop. DS2 had very acidic poos with such a powerful and pungent smell, I had to change his bedsheets even if they weren't stained.
Are you seeing a gastroenterologist?

Wow it sounds so counter intuitive!

We're trialling pepti formula but no one is sure if it's cmpi. We have a paediatrician and dietician but not a gastro no. Honestly I'm so fed up with this unhappy little soul. When will it get better?!

Did you swap gradually or do a straight swap of formula? He will vomit more if it's runnier than his old milk. And drink less if he doesn't like the taste. I would give it a week at least.

TheFirie · 03/12/2016 19:04

Maybe he will vomit more maybe he will vomit less. Trying won't do any harm. Prepare two bottle, one as usual, the one without the carabel and instead of 250 ml water, 300 ml water.

IF you have read a bit the NZ website about reflux, you will read that thickening agent can make things worse, because in case of vomit, they will stay in the oesophagus for longer and increase the pain. It is not as straight forward as it may seem.

Reflux is so complicated and frustrating. It is an umbrella term for many pains. We had the feeding ultra sound done, he had his meds yet for 8 months he cried non stop. The mother is alone, completely in the dark, with a crying baby who is in such pain.

Walking and patting, rubbing, his back and bottom for at least 30 min after feeding helped a bit. Sitting on a sofa with him straight and rubbing wouldn't work, it had to be walking, which at 2 am is pure torture.

It got worse with weaning, then round 8 months it started getting better. HE was at that time tested for allergies, and put on a no dairy, no wheat, no eggs/chicken, diet. This didn't mean he was fine but he was a lot worse when he was eating these foods.

Around 2y, he started eating these again and now he is a strong, happy ten year old. And I always used to say that he never cries because he had cried all the tears his body could produce in the first 8 months of his life. HE has some allergies nut not to the foods he needed to avoid. He is extremely allergic to penicillin, probably from having so much in the first months of life when vomit would enter lungs, ears during the choking episodes and cause infections. Also cats and hay fever. He also developed asthma when we moved in Oz. Despite this he is a sport star in athletics and swimming.

I also used to give him some fennel tea with a spoon, not in a bottle.

Eurgh you poor thing I think I'll lose my mind in I have to deal with all day crying for that long.

It was so hard, nobody can understand, especially not the doctors, because they see him during 10 minutes and they already have their ideas and theories. There are not present during the violent vomit episodes when it comes out as a jet not only from the mouth but the nose as well.

Anyway, DS2 is now absolutely fine, eats like a horse and milk, which he didn't touch in his first two years is is favourite food.

But back to you. How is it going? I wanted to ask you, where you using the thickened also before switching milk? Because what causes pain is the acids in the oesophagus and the bad thing about thickener is that is prolongates the contact in case of reflux. So it is good for avoiding coming back up, but if it goes up, it makes things worse.

It will get better as soon as his stomach will grow and take a more "pear " shape. In reflux babies it is very often flat in a potato shape, hence easy for the food to return up. But every child is unique and you must try what works for him. My DS was bf, I was following a diet (no milk, acid, ...can't remember) and he still had horrible diarrhoea and pain, so don't blame it on his milk, but just a growing digestive track and if he was better on the other milk, switch back. We were on lanzoprazole not omeprazole. I think i remember that lanzoprazole is a bit more effective for reflux (not that you would say with us) but you cannot used it with Gxviscon or a least you need to leave a couple of hours. Why not give it a go?

Hi just checking back in. We've been given neocate now. The vomiting seems to be settling. He doesn't like it and drinks the bare minimum. I've been suggested to sweeten it or add nesquick but he has a tooth so I'm really not keen.

I buckled and gave him three bottles of hipp milk yesterday and he screamed blue murder all eve so I do think he might have a sensitivity. As side from the vomiting which upsets him, his mood has improved in the last few days on hypo formula. I just wish he'd drink more 😞

Can you mix neocate with the hope and change it over gradually? This is what our paediatrician suggested and it worked perfectly for both my boys. Took about a week/10 days to swap over completely but they then drank a normal amount of neocate without a fuss!

5minutestobed · 13/12/2016 21:28

Just realised my phone auto corrected it Hipp to hope! Hopefully it still made sense!
