If DS has reactions to insect bites, is he likely to be allergic to bee/wasp stings?

and if so is there any way of testing in advance? he has had reaction to farm animal insect bites (never found out which animal), shich resulted in all over rash, lethargy etc. He also reacts to knat (sp?) bites with a very small rash around the area.
Im concerned that this means all insects will be a problem, and dont want to wait for a bee to see if hes allergic to them too, perhaps with more serious reaction.
He has slight eczema too.
any ideas? (ds is 2.5)

I don't know if you can test, but my mother reacts badly to all insect bites, including bees and wasps, so would suspect it would be more likely.

i react badly to insect bites... especially mosquito and midge bites but have been stung by a wasp with no reaction at all besides the normal

misdee · 23/01/2007 12:16

no idea. carry a bottle of piriton with you at all times.

dd1 was stung by a wasp at a very young age, no reaction. but when she was 2 she was bitten by an insect, and her eye swelled shut. very scary.

poppiesinaline · 23/01/2007 12:17

no idea but I am told that it isnt with the first sting (of bee or wasp) that they react (if anaphylactic reaction) but on the second sting. Not that that helps at all!

I am sure you would be able to get some sort of test for him.

you can have a blood test to see if your will react, DD2 had some blood take on fri and we will find out soon. We've asked because she has a skin condition which means if allegic she is more likely to have an antphlatic (sp) reaction.

We did it as part of her routine out-patients appointment.

They can also do a skin prick test to see as well

sorry just been out collecting from nursery - do you know if you can get the test from GP katz? Thanks for all responses

not sure but you could certainly ask, an addition part of reasoning is that my mum had severe reactions to bee stings so we wanted to know. They took a small pot about 2mls of blood from a thumb prick. My GPs don't do childrens blood tests but we were having others too so they just took a bit extra.

thewill · 23/01/2007 13:53

OK thanks will try and ask GPs. And avoid all stinging small creatures

I don't know if it's any help but my brother was allergic to insect bites, mosquitos made him swell up like a balloon. After years of trying different things, my mum ended up using homeopathic medicine. I think it was Apis Mel she used. Seek advice if you're interested, don't know where you stand on alternative medicines. I should also add that his reaction has got milder over the years, and that we still went on holiday to hot climes, just armed with insect repellent, Apis mel, and a mosquito net. And we ate lots of marmite before going - mossies don't like the taste.

He did have to get anti-histamines too, but the other stuff took the edge off.

Marmite - fantastic idea - thanks for the advice i will look out for apis mel. im hoping he will grow out of it, or at least have less severe reactions
