Can honey cause a reaction ?

DS (16mths) ate honey for first time 2 days ago. Noticed day later redness on one cheek and rounded patched of red with nothing in middle on both upper arms. Is not irritated by them but worried. Is this the start of ezcema or could it be a reaction. Anyone hear of slapped face syndrom? Paravirus B16? NHS 0-5 book seems to link to his symptoms. Previous temperature and runny nose. Any advice welcome as this is his first ever reaction to anything, has been a very healthy baby so far.

sounds like he could be allergic to the honey. if it clears up, wait for a week then give him some more. if he reacts in the same way then you'll know for sure.
or could you GP do an allergy test? If he is allergic to honey might he also be allergic to bee stings?

Thanks to all who responded to the advice. Rash on face has gone and arms nearly clear. Have been using Organic People Baby Salve, the best moisturiser I believe there is. Will keep him off the honey until he's over two like I did for his DS!

honey in unpasteurised(sp?) and can (v rarely i would think) cause something called botulism so thats why its not reccomended for under 1's. honey in baby food (jars-peach and honey etc) is safe.

ds has excema and possible asthma, advised to avoid honey until 5yrs, as honey is made from pollen and it can bring on symptoms of hayfever and pollen allergy.

funny isn't it, my friends ds now 7 was prescribed local honey to alleviate severe hayfever, apparently the pollen in it helps the body to defend against the allergens...
Bizarre!!!
I guess kids can be allergic to anything! I am allergic to celery, yep a vegetable, makes me vomit instantly and pass out....

yes it can...my friend goes into anaphylactic (sp?) shock when she eats honey...not nice.
