Organic/natural baby face cream

Can anyone recommend a non-chemical heavy one ? My baby has really dry skin on his face (maybe a form of cradle cap, not sure) with red flare ups. Have used E45 cream, Neal's Yard baby balm & baby oil, Calendula lotion and facial cream, olive oil, HC 0.5% but to no avail. I need something that is really intensive that i can stick to but totally natural with no alcohol, parabens, all that harmful milarky etc ... Also, does ds having cradle cap and very dry skin on face and body means that he'll develop further skin problems as he gets older or is it because his body's getting rid of my hormones as it starts to produce its own ?

aqueous cream ?

Scootergirl · 27/12/2006 18:34

What about Kamillosan? I think it's meant as nappy cream but it worked on my DD's really dry bits and I'm pretty sure it's all natural. Chamomile plays a major part...

twickersmum · 27/12/2006 18:43

Aveeno is brilliant (Boots)

Furball · 27/12/2006 18:43

boots do little me stuff which is natural and organic

Mojomummy · 27/12/2006 21:41

How old is your baby ? if he's very young..6 weeks + it could just be a milk rash, which just goes. I wouldn't put anything on & perhaps all the stuff you are putting on could be irritating it ?

Lots of olive oil is great for cradle cap - also Burts bees apricot oil which is 99% natural. Soaks in a treat & then the next day you can start to lift off the scales. Takes forever though, my DD still has a couple of patches at 22 weeks.

My daughter had this at a similar age. I was breastfeeding I was advised to give up dairy which seemed to help. I was recommended sos skin rescue cream - Green Baby sell it but you can get it from various places comes up on a google search. I was sceptical but cream is fabulous for her and cleared up her ecesma and she still has it every day and she is now nearly nine months. The dairy thing made a difference too, but she is fine now if I eat it. HTH

Tumblemum - am aware of SOS skin rescue cream, can it be used on baby's face ? Mine is 13 weeks now.

Mojomum - when you lifted the scales off did hair come out with it ? Also, if i left his cradle cap alone would it go away of its own accord as i tried the olive oil route and that didn't seem to help the cradle cap ?

I would second Aveeno cream recommendation nothing else as it may make it worse.
for cradle cap i used a wet flannel with warm water gently rubbing the area then rub gently with dry flannel.

Mojomummy · 28/12/2006 22:14

yes a little bit of hair comes off, but I am very gentle & her hair is growing back with no bald patches !

I do slather the oil on though, tip about a desertspoon on my hand & then sort of press onto the head. By the next day it's absorbed into the cradle cap & you can start to lift the scales off. It makes my mouth water...which is a bit gross really !

I tend to have a little scrape when she is breast feeding & it doesn't bother her.

I'm not aware it ever comes off unless you do this sort of thing - don't want to use chemical shampoos.

You didn't mention your DS age & whether he is bf or ff ?

nearlythree · 28/12/2006 22:41

Blyton, double-check all natural creams for lanolin. I used a calendula one with it in and ds had an allergic reaction and ended up with severely infected excema.

re cradle cap, the hair does come off but grows back v. quickly - the first hair always goes anyway.

Kittypickle · 28/12/2006 23:04

I would see if you can get your hands on some organic avocado oil and try using a little of that, possibly mixed with some hemp oil. It probably isn't going to smell too fantastic but you'll only need to use a little at a time.

Nemoinapeartree · 28/12/2006 23:05

oh we got a fab one for DD but was £10 for tub but still got half tub left it was called soothe it I think..will find website.

Nemoinapeartree · 28/12/2006 23:07

soothe it we used this from DD being around 4wks old as she had really bad eczema

TooTickyDoves · 28/12/2006 23:09

This is great and doesn't seem to irritate. I have also found Tui Bee Balme can work miracles. It does depend on the cause though. Could it be the cold weather?

williamsmummy · 29/12/2006 00:41

I think something simple like vaseline would do the trick. just because something is natural or organic, it doesnt mean its a safe product for a babies skin.
Oils from fruit kernels can still cause a problem for those with tree nut /nut allergies.
i wouild procede with great caution if your infant is under three months with problem skin.
I would also mention that common cradle cap creams are considered a real NO NO by most immunologists. ( hmmm dont think thats spelt correctly, sorry!)

aquas cream is a mild moisturiser, and is used as a soap for many children with ezcema.
I can understand the wish to stay away from chemicals, and the only way to do this is to get your GP to look up a few or suggest something you can buy.
As experimenting with different products is not really a way forward. There are plenty of 'cures' on the internet , but they need to have been properly tested first. For that peace of mind a prescription or advise from a dermotologist is the only way forward.

hope this helps

Furball · 29/12/2006 07:41

yes - vaseline is good - and cheap!

kiskidee · 29/12/2006 07:44

i third Aveeno. get it at boots in the short term or ask for it on prescription from the gp. it is great for all over dry skin.

for cradle cap, slather with olive oil several times a day, do not pick it. even when it is gross looking. leave it alone and it will flake of on its own over a couple days.

The woman in Green Baby said it was fine dd was about six weeks when she started on it, I can't rate it highly enough. Aveeno did not help her.

Think the thing is to try different things and see what works for you. I also think me cutting out dairy helped.

Hope it clears up for her.

I have usede SOS cream by barefoot botanicals since my baby was diagnosed with eczema at 6 weeks old. It works a treat although expensive. We use 6 150ml tubes on his face per month at the cost of 90 pounds (15 pounds per tube). But it transformed my baby's skin from sore weeping skin to beautiful smooth skin. We apply it to his face about 5 times a day and hie eczema is totally under control - worth every penny, I think.
