Does ezcema and ringworms look the same, im not sure if my son has ezcema, i took him to the doctors and they said that he has ezcema, he had his 8 month development today, i showed it to the health visitor she said it looks like ringworms to her.

Musa - my dd has discoid eczema which does look a bit like ringworm although the middle of the patch doesn't look quite as 'healed' as in ringworm. Discoid eczema is usually on the legs and upper arms. What has the GP given you - discoid eczema can be quite difficult to shift I'm afraid -

yuk hercules- put me off my pizza!!!
Musa- had same problem with ds2- doctor 1 said eczema.. health v said ringworm - went back to doctor 2- ringworm- they give different creams for the two. Get a 2nd or 3rd opinion- seems to be a bit of a grey area!

My ds had discoid eczema too. First time we went to the surgery he had two doctors and a nurse arguing over him about what it was! Can't remember what they gave him for it, some kind of steriod cream and his did go. His skin is really dry though and I keep it moisturised with diprobase cream. The moisturising is really important. The eczema society recommend moisturising, leaving it for 20 mins and then applying a thin layer of steriod cream (if needed) as the moisturiser softens the skin and allows the steroid to sink in properly. I really recommend joining the eczema society if you have a child with eczema, they are brilliant and I found our GP's knowledge to be quite limited. Unfortunately my dd has it too and hers is much worse especially in the summer. I have learnt to manage it quite well now though.

Wow. I've never heard of discoid ezcema but I'm pretty sure it's what ds (1yo) has got.

I took him to the doctors weeks ago and he said it was perhaps ezcema or psoriasis and gave me some hydrocortisane cream. He said if it didn't do the trick he'd refer ds to the dermatologist.

I wasn't convinced because I thought eczema appeared first in joint creases etc. but stopped worrying because the cream worked and ds never seemed bothered by the spots.

Does anyone have any reliable information? My quick whizz round the internet says - common in young children/only ever found in males over 55, linked to other forms of excema allergies/not linked to other forms of eczema and allergies - and other complete contradictions!

Eczema soc best source of info I've found. Good luck.

This is interesting - my ds has a red oval patch on his face that the dr thought was ringworm, but have been applying the cream twice a day for two weeks with absolutely no result. Will go back and raise the possibility of discoid excema. He has only one patch though - on his face - and nowhere else.
