Have I given my son an allergy?

I am really, REALLY upset....
I avoided peanut butter the whole way through my pregnancy but since having him I have craved it loads so have been eating it. I am still BF, and had no idea it was bad to eat whilst breastfeeding... He has very mild excema which we are treating successfully. I ate a peanut butter sandwhich the other day and then about half an hour later he had these hives all down the side of his face... I can only imagine I may have had some on my hand when touching him, or kisssed him. The doctor said is was unlikey to be peanut butter because he has never eaten it before, but now I have done research it sounds like it can go through the breast milk. Have I given him an allergy? I feel so angry with myself

Don't beat yourself about that, please don't. DS is allergic to peanuts and there's no one in our families with that sort of allergies, due to eczema I was extremely careful and yet... at 2 yrs old he put a peanut on his mouth, spat it out and his face went all puffy.

I have spent months wondering if it was because I had a Snickers bar during pregnancy, because at that time the Kamilosan was based in peanut oil, or if it was the bath oil that so successfully controlled his eczema. The truth is that I will never know and even if I knew... that wouldn't change the things.

Be kind to yourself, and although it's only natural that you feel bad about this thing happening, peanut allergy is dangerous but avoiding nuts is not so difficult as everything seems to carry a warning about containin nuts or not. A big hug, and if you have more questions here we are

thanks for that, I just wish I could turn back the clock .

Do children ever grow out of peanut allegies?

they can grow out of them

DS has a peanut allergy..which i blamed myself for ...i had terrible morning sickness. the only thing i could keep down was a peanut butter on toast, whihc i ate every morning for weeks....at my 12 week booking in, i was told peanuts were to be avoided, due to the possiblity of oversensitising the child and them being born with an allergy.....

so when he turned out to be allergic to peanuts, i was devastated and blamed myself.

we took him see an expert, a professor, specialising in allergies etc...he assured us it was not anyone;s fault, it is not hereditary and children can `( not all , but some ) grow out of it...he can have blood tests when he is 10 or so

the way i see it..it could be a lot worse..avoiding peanuts is quite easy, not like avoiding dairy or eggs for example...

he has grown out of his excema and asthma, i am quite confident he will grow out of this too......

don;t blame yourself, please ,of course there is no way you would have deliberately done anything to give him an allergy........please try not to blame yourself

That is so true, I felt very guilty in the early stages of DS's allergies thinking that things would have been diferent if I had bf for longer. Now, I know that anything I would have done had not change the things, he was born like that.

I would have had to have wean him on tiramisu and sushi alone to have caused such a range of food allergies (He is allergic to wheat, fish, nuts, dairy, eggs, soya, most vegetable protein, etc. even when I introudced things 2-6 months later than indicated in available guidelines, all his food was cooked at home and organic 90% of the time)

This is a russian roulette TBH...

How is are your kids, by the way? It must be hard work avoiding the allergies? I guess upi get used to it, it could be worse....
