Hello, we bought a puppy about six weeks ago. He is a mini daxie (longhaired) my daughter has had frequent colds (runny nose, itchy eyes) since then, and am a bit worried that it is because of the dog, are there any ways of finding out? She is going to docs monday about this, but u was just wondering if there are any definite signs i should be watching...

I am allergic to dogs, first sign was itchy red eyes, itchy skin around the pulse points, sneezing, and wheezing. Have you tried anti histamine, if it is an allergy should minimise the symptoms?

MammyMto3kids · 09/12/2006 20:43

My dog allergy is itchy eyes, my rabbit allergy is sneezing, my milk allergy is dizziness

  • and ............should think it is the dog and the doc will say there's no use in trying to get her used to it...

im allergic to animal hair and within minutes of being near an animal or someone that has an animal i have itchy, streaming eyes. Itchy tight throat and runny nose. Sometimes my skin on face and hands feel really tight too. Not very pleasant but an antihistamine usually works. Apart from when i ended up in hospital when i took a severe reaction.... but thats another story!

Hmm sounds like it is the dog So they are cold like symptoms? What about coughing? And does anyone know if you can get tested at the docs for this? (i.e. my 6 month old) or don't they do anything like that?

Thank you for posting

I think they can test, my allergy was self evident, ie came on every time around dogs, esp long haired ones. Wire hair =Ok. Sorry to hear it is a pain having any allergy.

both my children are allergic to dogs and cats.the pets dont have to be in the room even, if they've been in there fr some time but removed when the children visit they still get allergic reactions to it.

they get sore puffy eyes, coughs to the extent of needing an inhaler when they dont ever use one apart from then, breathless and irritable.

my eldest also comes out in a rash if he touches the anmals.not sure if thats the dogs or cats though.

we have to keep our children away from peoples homes where there are pets and be careful when we've visited people with pets incase we bring fur into the home on our clothes.

antihistamines dont help my two alot ad therefore we were told by the doctor to try to completely avoid them if possible.they might grow out of it abit in time so that antihistamine would help.

it also made my eldest sons glue ear alot wrse as allergies can contribute to it.he was in agony.

its not nice to have to make the decision to get rid of a pet but sometimes its the rght decision.be warned though that whilst the allergens are still in your house for sometime the children could still get the allergy.it will take time and alot of cleaning and hoovering over time to remove it.

good luck

Thank you so much for the advice. I of course will have to find my puppy a new home if she is allergic, it wouldn't be fair and my daughter does come first!! I shall let you all know of an update tomorrow (going to the doccies!!)

I found out I was allergic to cats when I was little. They do a simple prick test at the hospital and if it flares up then that is causing the reaction. However, the doctor advised my parents not to get rid of the cats because that would upset me more. I was much older than your baby of course (about 5 or 6) but there may not be any need to be hasty and find a new home for the little puppy... btw, I have always had cats since and am fine with mine, but others cause me to react. I think you can build up a resistence. Good luck at the docs x

Does sound like the dog. I am madly allergic to all animals and it has got much worse as I have got older. The reason I think it is the dog is the fact she has itchy eyes. Any itchiness in me is always animal related. If she had a cold would her eyes itch?

I remember when I was very little I got scratched by a cat, and the skin swelled up and itched around the scratch. That was the first sign for me.

Have to live pet free life now, which is very sad

I am allergic to dogs ,but still have one.I can't bear to part with her so I manage it.She'a 12 so not for too much longer.
I find if I wash my hands ater touching her helps a lot.My allergy doesn't cause any wheezyness just itchy swollen eyes so bearable.
Ds is the same and the dog has learnt not to lick us,she'll lick everyone else though

When I was at school my best friend had a dog. I really liked the dog, but of course couldn't go near it.

It always used to come up to me wagging it's tail, wanting patting, and my friend would always drag it away.

Anyway, the daay came when I called to see my friend, and the dog took one look at me, howled pitifully, and ran off with it's tail between it's legs. Poor dog, I really liked it
