Help! - DH keeps getting fat lips and hives

emjarv · 29/11/2006 10:30

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing DH to keep breaking out in hives and suffering from swollen lips. This has been going on now for a couple of months. There doesn't appear to be any trigger, it seems to be completely random.
Dr was absolutely useless, just gave him a prescription for antibiotics.
I must confess to finding it quite amusing when DH wakes up in the morning with Mick Jagger lips , but, I think he is starting to get a little concerned now.
Anyone had any similar experiences?

Have you got hypo-allergenic pillows?

NotSoupyOhNoNoNoShesOnABreak · 29/11/2006 10:37

Try keeping a diary of food/drink?
DHs grand mother used to get this after eating anything with onion in it. I've had the lips after biting a piece of peppercorn.
Sounds more like an allergy than something that needs atibiotics!

hehe. i remember getting the swollen lips when i got together with DP. he thought i was allergic to him. it went after about a week and i never had it again. would anti-histamines help rather than antibiotics?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 29/11/2006 10:40

There are lots of things that could be doing this. A food diary is a good idea.

It could be acidic fruit doing it, anything with cows milk protein in, or nuts.

i would go out and get a bottle of piriton syrup to have on standby for major reactions.

Trinityrhino · 29/11/2006 10:48

I was going to say 'you really should stop smacking him in the face with a beehive then'

sorry,I'm glad others have more productive advice for you

rebelmum1 · 29/11/2006 10:59

If it's an allergy don't take antibiotics or pain killers as these can make it worse. I get hives and they can be a reaction to stress, exhaustion or to a specific irritant. I'm now allergic to all pain killers and penicillin

rebelmum1 · 29/11/2006 11:00

If it's all on his face could be the pillow. Do you use persil? Has he been given anti-histamine?

rebelmum1 · 29/11/2006 11:01

A partner of mine had an allergy to persil, only it wasn't his lips.... it happened first night over meeting my parents .. tee hee

emjarv · 29/11/2006 11:03

He's tried anti-histamines, they don't seem to work. I'll suggest the food diary to him. We had thought it might be a food allergy, although the symptoms appear at strange times, like first thing in the morning, before he has had anything to eat. Wouldn't symptoms appear relatively quickly after eating the offending food?

Remove all bedding and thoroughly clean mattress. Rewash everything in a sensitive powder...your usual could have changed its formula without you knowing...and see how you go.

It has to simply be something that his face is touching for it to be localised.

Take regular anti histamine for a week or so...the same type as for hayfever and then reduce alternate days. Make a list of foods for a week or two and any other reactions.

Check your soap, flannels and towels as well as your husbands razor and face stuff...if he uses any.
try not to laugh!!!

IMPORTANT though...should he begin to feel wheezy at all straight to casualty...allergic reactions can cause the lungs to close up and/or the throat to constrict
xx

emjarv · 29/11/2006 11:05

Don't use Persil and it's not just on his face - well obvioulsy the swollen lip bit is - the hives crop up all over the place!!

feathers/washing powder maybe?

rebelmum1 · 29/11/2006 11:24

Does he take pain killers could be aspirin

drs · 29/11/2006 12:04

Suffer from something similar myself - just a random urticaria. Big hives on body, face, eyes etc. People used to look at me sympathetically as if husband had hit me!! Often stress related or due to pressure ie under bra straps, belts, back of legs from sitting down.

Would suggest the antihistamine Telfast (fexofenadine)180mg as best one for this, take every day until under control.

ssd · 29/11/2006 12:07

I got this once and it was a very strange mix of stress and over excitment due to falling in love!

wierd or what!

just as well he chucked me!

rebelmum1 · 29/11/2006 16:06

funny how this thread has died

ssd · 29/11/2006 17:33

my fault!

taramac · 29/11/2006 17:37

Exact same thing has been happening to me over last few months so got blood test done and found out I am highly allergic to dust mites and grass pollen - so changing the whole bedding and have asked for advice on other thread.

Got script for an epi pen and for anti histamines which work - is v scary though the lips do look funny - I call it my trout pout!

emjarv · 29/11/2006 17:54

Yes sorry...was miles away pondering the idea that he may have fallen in love again!
What a ridiculous thought! Who would want him looking the way he does at the moment...apart from me of course.
Thanks for all suggestions so far, there is plenty for us to investigate.
