See GP after nut reaction?

Both my DC decided to taste some peanuts and cashews that DH was cooking with. They had about a quarter of each type each. They both immediately complained of a sore mouth/tongue and acted a bit panicky.

DS2 came out in a blotchy slightly raised red rash round his mouth and on his cheeks, it went away when we gave Piriton.

We gave DS1 Piriton too and he said his mouth felt better. Shortly after he complained of feeling sick and vomited copiously.

They are both ok now and fast asleep.

Would it be overreacting to see the GP about this?

I'm sleep deprived with a 2 month old here so any advice welcome. Coherent thought is not my string point right now Flowers

We've not avoided nuts at all in the past, but they've probably only had tastes before of curry sauce with nuts etc and we cook with groundnut oil a fair bit. They are quite fussy eaters although getting better and enjoying tasting new things a lot

Were a fairly dust/pollen/feather pillow etc allergic family, I have aSthma and we all have dry skin issues if that's relevant.

Def see the GP with both your sons. The same thing happened to my DS aged 3yrs. We were referred to an allergy consultant who took blood from DS and tested for allergy to all sorts of things-feathers, pollen, nuts, seeds. horses, cats, dogs, eggs etc. DS now has piriton and epipens with him all the time. The family all have varying degrees of asthma, eczema, allergies. A severe allergic attack can be fatal, so please get your sons referred for tests. Good luck

It just caught me by surprise. I was feeding the baby then DH shouted through if it was ok for them to have nuts Hmm younger one is 3 so I said just chop them up a bit.

I heard them shout about the sore tongue and mouth, then DH came through to make sure he had the right bottle and dose for the Piriton.

I didn't see DS2's face till he came through after dinner and it still made me go Shock

DH seemed remarkably unperturbed as he's not a worrier like me. Although he agreed with me about the GP just after I posted this. We'll get an appointment ASAP.

Yes go to the gp, they'll arrange for allergy testing. Sounds like they are both allergic to at least one of the nuts. It's important to be prepared for any further exposure, especially if either of them have asthma.

Definitely go to GP. In the meantime, avoid all nuts. Check all food packaging carefully. Also, avoid all Indian or Chinese restaurants. I would also avoid all nuts yourself and I'd carry antihistamine around with you everywhere. When tested, you may find your dcs are allergic to only peanuts or only cashews.

My ds had a reaction to cashew nuts... Swollen mouth, immediate vomiting, rash etc. it was the second time he had them and the first time we just didn't recognise it. He had eaten some and his lips were swollen and we stupidly assumed it was because the nuts had salt on them. Long story short he has since been tested and diagnosed with a cashew nut allergy. He isn't allergic to any other nuts according to the tests but we have been told to keep him away just in case.
Hopefully you can get them tested soon but in the meantime is agree with Neolara above saying to bring antihistamine everywhere. I have bottles stashed everywhere as well as his medication he now brings everywhere with him. I definitely wouldn't eat out unless we had some because it's very risky. We had a near miss once with a jar of shop bought pesto... Apparently lots of companies substitute cashew nuts for pine nuts as they are cheaper.

We're waiting for referral now and I've mentioned it to their school.

I've been taking Piriton out in the nappy bag and will remember to get some spare!

thanks
