After I have eaten anything doughy I alway get a bad stomach ache, ie, bloating, cramping. Last week I cut all doughy food out of my diet and I have been fine. I do quite a bit of home baking and I wondered if I used gluten free flour my family would notice any difference if the taste of the food. I mean can you even get gluten free self raising flour? I'm planning to make some scones later

Yes, you can get gluten free flour, and gluten
free self raising flour, and gluten free baking powder. Try a health shop or the free-from
section in your local supermarket.

Cakes work really well (but don't follow the
recipe on the flour packets - find a good book
of gluten free recipes - the proportions of
the ingredients are not quite the same as in
your usual recipes and the recipe on the
packet we use (I think it is Dove flour)
doesn't work. Biscuits
are reasonable but again best if you follow
a recipe designed for gluten free flour. Bread
is just about bread-like if it is freshly
baked, otherwise horrible.

Hi,

I use Doves Farm which is good. I make a batch of gluten free biscuits a week and they come out really nice. I've also made cakes and other things (sorry can't remember right now!) THey also make a bread flour which I haven't tried yet.

I have followed my own recipes as my dd is also egg-allergic so I can't use recipes on the pack.

I was told to use xanthan gum when baking cake with gluten free flour (no gluten means less sticky). You can get it from big Tescos and health food shops. Instructions on back of tub. COuldn't notice any difference in taste.

cheer everyone... I will try xanthan gum... (sounds sticky)
texasrose... you don't have a recipe you could share with me do you... my Son is allergic to eggs, and it would be nice to cook something we could all eat..

my dd2 doesn't have cd, but because she has a bowel condition being investigated and the g-f diet works, we do get it all on prescription. Our problem is that she can't have dairy or egg either, and nearly all fo the meagre selection of free-from food in shops contains something she can't have - so prescription is our only option.

HI WHERE DO I GET GLUTTEN FREE SWEETS

thisweathersajoke · 11/02/2009 18:27

HI

I used to have a cafe where i catered for people who had many food intolerances and there are ways around the gluten issue - try the coeliacs website and gluten free on the go.

This recipe from delia is a great one for gluten free chocolate log - www.deliaonline.com/recipes/squidgy-chocolate-log,1217,RC.html

Good luck x

WALJIM - lots of sweets are gluten free, you just need to know which. What sort are you looking for?

RUMMUM, from your first post i would say you should ask your GP about a blood test for coeliac disease

rummum - if I make gluten free cakes for me the rest of the family pinch them. You can get gluten free self raising flour and that's been a lot better than my attempts at using other flour. I'd recommend buckwheat flour for pancakes, though.

Generally I'd say gluten free baking needs more water and doesn't keep as well as ordinary baking.

If you are going to have a test you need to be eating a lot of gluten before you have it. You may want to go gluten free even if the test is negative but have a test first.

You can get digestive enzymes that help digest gluten if your test is negative but you find you can't manage the diet. I have used Biocare Glutenzyme Plus but there are others, like Peptizyde, that may be better.
