Lactose issue and b/feeding

Posted a while ago as thought DS might be lactose intolerant. Having withdrawn any formula, the rash (eczema) vanished. Has started to flare up a little, and this may sound silly, but could it be from me eating dairy and b/feeding him?

I can't see it, I suppose in theory..... but he'd have to be very very sensitive to it. Is he having anything other than breast milk, or have you changed your washing powder etc, perhaps it's not lactose he's sensitve to.

No changes in powder / lotions etc. It's not too bad this time though- certainly better than when he had normal formula.

It is possible, ds1 and 2 were sensitive to the dairy products I was eating whilst Bf them. Hv diagnosed it in ds1, I cut out all dairy products for 2 weeks initially and he stopped projectile vomiting. You should consult your Hv or GP to help with diagnosis and as its wise to see a dietician if you do cut out dairy altogether.

Hi DG - I avoid dairy (stick to soya) but had a hot chocolate when DS was 6 weeks old - he went bright red after the next feed & was crying for hours. He's now 10 months & diagnosed lactose intolerant (amongst other things so do be vigilant - weaning has been ...interesting here). I'd agree with bensmum3 and see your GP about this and dietician for weaning.

DetentionGrrrl · 17/11/2006 09:37

To be honest, HV as useful as chocolate teapot (big issues with her yesterday ) and GP didn't seem bothered. I'll eliminate dairy for a week and see what happens i think.

Gp's generally aren't interested in this stuff, it seems to be the last thing on their minds, perhaps not medical enough?! Anyway, try it, but you do need to make sure you're still getting your calcium and protein from somewhere else. If you can't bear soya (so good soya is nice, quite sweet) then how about rice or oat milk? Have a look in the health food shops and ask for advice, don't forget you can get your protein from meat, fish, eggs and beans (being careful to avoid all dairy and not just milk otherwise the exercise would be pointless!) Good luck.

Breast milk contains lactose.

DetentionGrrrl · 21/11/2006 09:17

It can't be lactose causing it then.

I don't like the soya formula i have either. We use it for anyone babysitting, but it smells horrible and i've recently read bad things about giving little ones soya.

Don't know what to do!

could it also be from change in weather recently? Its got a lot colder and my skin is dryer despite no change in diet. What creams are you using?
If you want to be sure it isn't your diet, then do a dairy free trial. Soy isn't great, but if you think soy milk smells bad you should smell the formula for children with severe cows milk protein intolerance...

NotQuiteCockney · 21/11/2006 10:06

Breast milk does contain lactose - baby issues with cow's milk tend to be down to cow's milk proteins, not lactose. (Most? All? Allergies are to proteins, anyway, not lactose, which is a sugar. Lactose issues tend to be gut problems, not ezcema etc.)

I have known one bf mum whose baby threw up if she ate dairy - the daughter was sensitive to lots of food in her mum's diet, very hard on the mum.

This could be your daughter reacting to cow's milk protein in your milk. Can you try cutting out dairy for a week and seeing if it has any effect?

My baby was premature and is now 9 wks old. She is keeping me awake from 6am until 9.30am as she is straining to poo and I think it might be linked to dairy as I have increased my milk intake and cheese intake as suggested by HV.I am going to try and eliminate this from my diet as from today and will keep you posted. I would welcome other comments re this

dorisofdevon · 23/11/2006 15:44

HI all dd was def intolerant to something in my diet / lactose or cows milk protein once I changed my diet when she was 6 weeks had a different child no more angry crying
HTH

It could be yes, this happened to my eldest and was qyute severe- he lost a pound ehich, when you're born full term at 5lb 5oz isn't good!

We didn't relaise the cause until after I had stopped BF (although we were well equipped wehn DS3 had same problem)

with a baby so young you really do need to ask for referral to a dietician. And to make sure, if you decide to give up dairy, you get all the right foods. Plenty of soya or rice calcium fortified milk, for instance

PeachyClair · 23/11/2006 15:55

NB sam is reactive to botjh lactose and casein, which is the milk protein)
