GF in Italy

We are going to lake Garda as a family with Coeliac DC in a few weeks. Just wondering If anyone has been in the area and whether its at all GF friendly. My usual MO is to bring a range of GF foods and cook in but I still remember the joy of eating out abroad. Plan to contact coeliacs.org as well.

I toured Italy for three months in a play and one of the actors was gluten intolerant...she used to bring her own bag of pasta into restaurants! She'd ask the waiter to ask the chef if he'd mind cooking it for her and then she'd eat whatever sauce she felt was ok for her.

She also ate a lot of the wonderful fish on offer there...they have BEAUTIFUL fish and salads. The shops have gluten free pasta...widely available over there.

I am coeliac too. Also planning to go to Garda next year so would love to hear how you get on! I have read that Italians are quite clued up about GF and some places offer Gf pizzas etc. if all else fails have risotto?

I will indeed Lagoon. DC is only 6 but an adventurous eater so hopefully we will be ok.

Italy is strangely brilliant for GF! No need at all to take your own pasta. Everywhere seems to be really clued up on it, every restaurant had gf options (Most did GF pizza as well as pasta, as well of course as the fish and local dishes and they knew without being told to drop the breadcrumbs,etc), even the ice cream charts outside kiosk had labelled which ones were GF. I stayed in a hotel (was nervous doing so, quite recent GF) and these even had a GF drawer for me at breakfast so I could help myself to the GF cakes, breads etc. Italy is by a long way the best/easiest GF destination I've been to so far.

Not been there specifically but Italy are now testing all children for coeliac disease so are generally very aware and it should be easy to eat out. Let us know how you get on.
