Silent reflux and CMPI - not coping...

My baby was born almost six weeks ago at 34 weeks and since then we have been on the most exhausting, heartbreaking rollercoaster... after many gp visits and a hospital admission we have been told she has silent reflux and a suspected CMPI - after many milk changes - Nutraprem, C&G infant 1, C&G comfort milk, back to C&G infant 1, Nutramigen Lipel - we started on Nutramigen AA three days ago. We are also on Ranitidine 0.55 of a dose three times a day and carobel to thicken the milk and have been now for a few weeks. Since the milk change things have not been good... Explosive loose nappies almost after every feed, screams like she's in pain, lots of bottom wind, reflux is not under control - she's comfort feeding, snuffly all the time, burping which makes her cry and hiccups... I've had basically no sleep now since she was born, I'm exhausted, feel like I'm slipping into depression and can't see any way out of this as I cant seem to be able to help my baby

Thanks 'bakingtins'. Thats really good advice. We unfortunately haven't been able to get the omeprazole this evening due to no chemists being open in Northern Ireland.... If we make it through tonight I can see how we go with the tablets tmor.
Good to know about the ranitidine needing to be kept up for a while, I'd never have reallised!!!!

I'd definitely not give gaviscon if she already gets carobel and ranitidine or omeprozole. I got the omeprozole in liquid form, not the tablet form, check with your own gp to see if they can prescribe it instead as it's so much easier to give. It's expensive though, my pharmacist said it was £300 for a bottle of it!

Hope it helps x

I was prescribed the Losac MUPS, ended up back at the gp this morning who contacted the ped team at the local hospital. dosage upped to 7.5mg per day and told to start using the carobel again.
Delivered the first dose this evening after dissolving the tablet In 3 mg of water and then drawing 1.5mg into a syringe.
Thankfully the wee one took it without issue - my only concern is what raised prev in this thread about the medicine being in the grains and how much do I actually get of those into the syringe..... Will try my best though...
Dont know what to do about the ranitidine now - I asked the doc about weaning off the ranitidine as you ladies had said the omeprazole takes a while to fully kick in - doc said no I'd to stop it. Not convinced this is right ???

The medicine is in the grains, it is totally irrelevant how much water you give, it does not form a solution. You need a nurofen syringe with a bigger whole, the grains won't go through a normal syringe 'spout' at all. To do 7.5mg you need to snap the 10mg tablet in half along the scored line, then with a knife cut one half into quarters ( hard to be accurate but much better than giving half the liquid). Take the syringe to bits and put the tablet bits (half plus quarter = 7.5mg) into the syringe barrel then replace plunger. Suck up some water to dissolve the tablets and squirt in. You will be left with some of the little balls, suck up more water to resuspend and repeat until you have got at least 95% of them in. I could do a 5mg dose with 2 goes at suspending and 2-3 ml in total.

How are you doing deedee? I went through this 3yrs ago and it was a horrid time. I still feel teary thinking back on it. I feel robbed of the newborn stage as for me it is all a foggy, emotional heartbreaking mess. I got v low frm it all ( pnd )

This is what got me through
Omeprazole
Neocate
Baby bjorn bouncer
Sertraline (anti dep)
4 hrs unbroken sleep at night. I forced dh to be in charge from 8-12 so that I could get 4 hour block. I started to get stronger mentally after that.
Wine
Coffee

On the plus side, nothing in the last three years have been as bad. Nothing. Teething, weaning, bugs, terrible twos. All piece of cake in comparison.

Sending you lots of love
