Cows milk protein intolerance

Hello
I have been exclusively breastfeeding DD (5 weeks old). She has been admitted to hospital a few days ago and I have been told to go dairy free to add if it's a cows milk protein intolerance in addition to supplementing with neonate. The dietician can't see me before my DD is discharged and I feel a bit lost.

Can I eat products which don't contain milk products but are made in a factory where other products are?

Do I need to exclude everything that contains any form of milk products e.g ham that apparently can have it in or deli products (obviously not cheese ones)?

I'm a bit overwhelmed. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thank you x

Newmummy,

As your DD has had such a strong reaction (I assume that's why she's in hospital), you are probably best off avoiding all products containing milk (including those deli products which have milk proteins, etc), and for now also those that are 'may contain' type products. Although the may contain / same factory type products might be fine to be introduced at a later date, you will find that occasionally they are contaminated, and if it is a really strong reaction from DD, and happens to happen while you are still figuring things out, it could really throw you for a while.

Once you have figured things out (eg is it just dairy, or something else as well; etc etc), you may want to introduce may contains, and possibly the milk products low on the milk ladder, but best to exclude completely while assessing the situation..

There is a really helpful facebook site - cows milk protein allergy support - which has a lot of people who are really helpful and i found a lifesaver in our first days of allergies, some years ago...

Best of luck.
