Severe milk reaction in 6 month old, advice needed pls

Sorry this is a bit of an essay but any help would be appreciated!
I have been weaning my son onto the usual root veg and fruit for the past 2 weeks and yesterday thought I would add breakfast into his day. I bought some organic, gluten free banana and peach porridge that said it was suitable from 4+ months. After a couple of spoonfuls his lips started to swell and then his face and he threw up loads of mucus on me. I called an ambulance in panic! He was given sabutamol (sp?) in the ambulance and piriton when we got to the hospital and his face and lips went back to normal by the afternoon. The first ingredient in the porridge was cows milk so they have put it down to that.
I am now petrified about feeding him his solids again in case something else causes a reaction and him coming into any contact with milk. He did have apple when we got home last night and was fine but I had no idea milk could cause such a severe allergic reaction, I always thought it was things like peanuts that make lips and face swell. At least his breathing was fine and his tongue didn't swell.
Has anyone else had experience of this or any advice? Is it an allergy that can get worse? I am still breastfeeding and was hoping to introduce a couple of formula feeds had this not happened, we have been prescribed Cow&Gate Pepti but I'm scared of that now!!
I am not normally such a neurotic mum but his reaction scared me so much yesterday that I think I have lost my confidence.

I had just the same happen with my ds at 6 months, huge swollen lips at a hint of milk. It was definitely really scary and upsetting when it happened and it does make you very nervous for the future. With mine (now 13 months) more recently it has just caused a rash all over his face which although unpleasant is much less scary. My doctor prescribed a bottle of antihistamine liquid which I carry around with me everywhere in case of a reaction, in which case I give him 2.5ml and it calms things down really quickly. With this the only scary bit is that pretty soon afterwards he looks as if he is going into a coma but apparently it is a combination of the antihistamines sedating him and the body shutting itself down to repair itself; he is fine when he wakes up. If it definitely is milk, you will have to become adept at reading labels for ingredients; you would be surprised how many things do have milk by-products in! But most children do grow out of it so do not despair, and my ds loves things like soya yoghurts and things made from rice milk...

It could be a milk allergy, I would go back to the GP and insist in having him refered for allergy testing. It will take some time though, in the mean time carry Piriton Syrup with you at all times and read the labels.

BTW Allergy to peach is highly common in my country, although not the severe reactions.
