Can frequent night waking at 11 months be the only symptom of a food intolerance?

DS was quite refluxy as a small baby, grew out of it at 5 months without needing medication. Sometimes fills nappy up to 6 times a day, other times can only be once. Doesn't seem constipated or diahorrea. Wakes up to 6 times a night still, quite windy and uncomfortable. Breastfed but has formula in porridge. No eczema, great weight gain. If dairy intolerant would he have other obvious symptoms?

Check his height gain, Needsweets .... weight gain is no longer considered particularly relevant (except by docs who aren't up to scratch on the latest research). However height gain (or rather lack of) can be a good indicator.

My DS2 was always 90th percentile for weight, but just got lower and lower on height percentiles. Didn't start to gain again until we identified about the 10th 'allergy' food, which had only given symptoms of not sleeping, plus (what i didn't know at the time was related) recurrent ear infections. He grew 2cm in 2 months after taking wheat/gluten out of his diet, and has gone from about 7th percentile height to being 50th percentile last time i looked.

every child seems to have different reactions, particularly if only an intolerance c.f. a full blown allergic reaction (not that i'm dismissing intolerances, just can be harder to spot!).

He was last measured 2 months ago and was just under the 90th percentile so quite long for his age. He has had 2 ear infections but both followed a cold/viral infection. Doesn't sound likely that he has an intolerance but I don't know how to explain his frequent waking otherwise. He doesn't seem uncomfortable and settles down again quickly unless teething. We don't have any 'bad habits' with sleep so don't know why he is so bad still. I was sure he had a worse night after yogurt and cheese but could have been a coincidence. He is on goats milk formula in food to see if that makes a difference. I spoke to a GP and she said give soya instead of dairy for a couple of weeks but I've read this isn't good for CMPI.

Something like 80% of cmpa kids are also soy allergic. Not sure of the link for cmpi. just for testing, might be worth trying something like oat milk. goat's milk is likely to cause a similar reaction (tho it works for some people).

if you're not certain of link to dairy, you could just try it again a few times; go off it (eg onto oatly) for say 2 weeks, then try it with dairy and see if there is a reaction.

Don't try soya, try goats milk.

Is it likely he may have mild lactose intolerance and not an allergy? You could try lacto free milk

Sorry I don't mean goats milk, try coconut milk, the koko brand. It's lovely in porridge.

Yes, sleep disturbance was the main symptom for fructose malabsorption here, so I would imagine it coudl be for other things.

The bowel movements would cause concern for me. Dd1 was/is cmp intolerant she was waking up with tummy pain for many years before we realised so it definitely could be part of the reasons for waking up although many babies do wake up for feeds at that age. Dd1 can tolerate goat's milk but she really don't bother much with milk

Needsweetstosurvive · 02/04/2015 21:21

Since that post he actually has only had a bowel movement 1 - 3 times a day and all normal consistancy. He doesn't get a feed in the night, hasn't for over 2 months so he isn't waking for that. I've stopped giving him cheese and yogurt and he only has cooked dairy in some things. I've had him on goats milk formula for a few weeks now too. His wakings have decreased to about 3 a night, not sure if due to the changes or just naturally improving. He had a rough night last night after trying him on fish pie that I had made with cows milk and cheese but also teething molars so not sure if this is complicating things as he has always woken up loads when teething.
