So DD has a suspected cows milk allergy. This has yet to be confirmed. HV has suggested giving her some cows milk and 'seeing what happens'. I am reluctant to do this as she had two spoonfuls of milk containing porridge previously and was covered instantly in hives. I'm concerned that next time might be even worse. Would you try it? Is this quite normal? I'm awaiting a referral to a dietician if that makes any difference

My dd had cmpa since birth and was on prescription milk. Pead asked me to try her with normal formula at are last app so I started her on it last week and no reactions since thankfully. Babies can grow out of allergies very fast ( she is 6mnths). I would say give it a go have someone else at home with you with a car incase you need to go to hospital maybe pack a small bag then try some and stay with them for the first half hour watching breathing for any changes then if ok I would maybe check there skin every once n a while for rashes then gradually up the dairy intake over a few days/week to see

I made some milk and poridge paste, and put it on DS1's leg, before I was going to let it go anywhere near his mouth again.
The poridge and milk blob (5p piece size) was red underneath. the oat and water blob remained looking normal. I didn't risk eating dairy til we'd had a skin test.

Don't give straight milk if previous exposure has resulted in hives! Wait for your dietician appointment. For introduction I would have thought you'd have to do the milk ladder - so start with small amount of biscuit for a week etc. only after you go through it would you end at fresh milk!

Your HV is not a specialist in allergies and her advice is not helpful. Push for a referral to a paediatric allergy consultant.

dairyfreequeen · 25/03/2015 01:31

yes if you were 'testing' her tolerance you'd start at the bottom of the milk ladder, not with straight milk! My hv was spectacularly unhelpful with our cmpa diagnosis ("carry on eating whatever you ate in pregnancy while you're breastfeeding" after paeds advised df diet) so id also wait to speak to specialists if i were you

Google the milk ladder. It's 12 steps for the reintroduction of dairy. Actual milk or formula is quite high up the ladder I think. You start with 1/4 or 1/2 of a malted milk biscuit so baked milk products and slowly work your way up. The ignorance of some health professionals is shocking. Especially if a previous reaction had shown hives very quickly. That would make you think it was an ieg reaction (happens instantly / up to a few hours later) are you on Facebook? Type CMPA into search, there are some very helpful pages. Allergies are a minefield but you soon get used to them unfortunately.
