sounds a bit drastic. Have you to add them back in gradually at some point?

dementedpixie · 16/03/2015 10:04

www.nhs.uk/conditions/irritable-bowel-syndrome/pages/treatment.aspx - is it the low FODMAP diet?

dementedpixie · 16/03/2015 10:06

he also shouldn't be telling you to cut food out without directing you to foods you can eat. have you seen a dietitian too?

wednesdaygirl · 16/03/2015 11:24

No dietician

you need to see a dietician. you can't just stop eating all those foods, you'll go nuts for a start.

I tried the low residue diet for IBS, which didn't work. mine pretty much vanished when I stopped eating gluten. I'd seen the dietician a few times and had all the joy of a colonoscopy and blood tests first.

Where do i find a dietician

nhs referral (sp?).

I know I saw one when I was just seeing my gp then had a couple of further visits after the consultant had finished with me a couple of years later.

Andrise · 16/03/2015 23:49

Agree that excluding gluten may well be the answer. I have had IBS for donkeys years (50 this year). If i don't eat gluten all is calm. If I fall off the wagon it is straight back to the cramping and diarrhoea. Still daft enough to do it sometimes though.

tygtygtyg · 16/03/2015 23:53

That is an impossible diet.

wednesdaygirl · 17/03/2015 14:54

That's stupid advice!!!

As a former IBS sufferer, I can recommend that you look into low carbing (which will allow plenty of dairy, eggs and red meat!)

The FODMAP is a very similar approach.

Good luck. It's a horrible thing to suffer from.

Thank you

When my attacks are bad I find sticking to chicken/salmon/prawns, rice and spinach/rocket for a day or two pretty effective at calming things down. Eat more widely at other times along fodmaps lines.
here is a list of FODMAPs trained dietitians.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 02/04/2015 21:22

I have IBS I was advised to cut out food groups slowly then reintroduce them if it had no affect. I started with gluten which had no effect and finally figured out that it is dairy.

I can't see how cutting out everything in one go is supposed to help you find your triggers.

ALittleFaith · 05/04/2015 22:14

Have they tested you for coeliac disease before diagnosing you with IBS?

bananaandcustard · 05/04/2015 23:20

I did the fodmapp diet. it worked for a while, i was able to add in food that had given me a lot of discomfort.

An exclusion diet is hard but we need to somehow give the gut a rest and give it time to heal.

I have permanent bowel damage from food poisoning.
