Wheat intolerance; can a sufferer tell me what symptons they suffer from please?

I suspect this may be an issue for me. A few years ago I have a long period of stomach cramps, endless wind and diarrhea. I cut out wheat just to see what happened as it worked! However a few months after that I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression and put on citalopram. I assumed that was the cause of the tummy problems as they went after that in spite of eating wheat again.

I recently read that wheat intolerance can cause depression itself and I have been a chronic depressive now since the first diagnosis and can't seem to stop taking the ADs for more than about 6 months without all the symptom returning with a vengeance.

I recently stopped eating wheat as part of a low-carb weight loss diet and my stomach problems have eased up a lot, I feel more energetic and my libido has made an unexpected and surprising return after years of being more or less AWOL.

Googling is just making me more confused. I am reluctant to see my GP as they seem to fairly dismissive and patronising about people investigating their own illnesses and I have been many times to complain about stomach pain, exhaustion and depression. I have more or less given up TBH.

There's a very good book called "Wheat Belly" by an American Dr. William Davis M.D. and he gives descriptions of symptoms just like yours occurring with wheat both brown and white. It's in sooo many things and makes a huge number of manufacturers very rich. The medics don't seem to care.

Don't give up Grin I don't eat it and dh becomes almost manic with it Shock but we're ok with pure rye and spelt bread (if you find it difficult to give it up toast)!!

Thank you ppeat. Had a look at that website and it looks as if it's more or less the same as an Atkind-type lowcarb diet at the midpoint level - ie not cutting out fruit or non-green veg. Interesting. Quite surprised that he also rejects rice and oats.

Yes I'm surpised about some of the things he rejects because I lost 3 stone eating rye bread and whole rice and oats!! But he's spot on about wheat!

You should be tested for coeliac disease before you give up wheat.

I used to get the most awful sores in my mouth, had no energy, and really really bad stomach aches. When I was little I had rashes and vomited a lot.

I haven't purposely had wheat in over a decade. I feel best when I eat mostly protein and vegetables with some fresh fruit. I'm pregnant now though and am having grains, potatoes, and sugar as well because they were the only things I could stomach for awhile.

I get an incredibly sore stomach, diarrhea, bloating, gas, distended stomach, depression, loss of sleep, painful skin rash and anxiety.

Worth looking into low fodmaps diet, it's really helped me.
