lactose free formula?

My ds 5months has terrible eczema on his face, reflux (on gaviscon) and vile explosive nappies 2-3 times per day. All symptoms got much worse when I stopped breastfeeding at 4months. I suspect milk is the culprit. I have now seem three different gps and numerous creams for his skin, none of them were willing to prescribe an alternative formula?

does this sound like a diary allergy/intolerance? Would it be worth trying an off the shelf lactose free or soy formula? and which one?

He's 91st centile an no problems with weight gain, seemingly no tummy pain ans this is why gp won't prescribe but he's becoming more unsettled and rash on his face flares up a lot.

could be dairy, my ds was diagnosed early on but it took my (daft) hv ages to believe he had an allergy because his weight gain has always been enormous, steadily at 1lb a week at one point. i was told by the paed in hospital that reactions could be reflux or diarrhea so i dont think your gps grounds for dismissing you are good ones, id ask to see someone else. Afraid i dont know much about formula as ds is ebf but dont buy soya or lactose free - if your baby is reacting to milk its likely the protein (lactose being the sugar, also present in breast milk) and soya proteins are very similar so it is common to be allergic to both. Apparently gps can be a bit reluctant to prescribe the appropriate formulas as theyre around £50 a pop. check out cowsmilkproteinallergysupport.com they have some advice on getting a diagnosis

DD is on Neocate, which is a hypoallergenic formula. You can only get it on prescription, but it has made a huge difference to her digestive problems. I had to get the prescription from a consultant dietician initially, but I now have it on a repeat prescription from my GP. It might be worth asking for a two week trial?

I'd avoid soy. I've been told to avoid it for DD as children with cmpa also often have issues with soy.

I had a sma lactose free milk on prescription for my daughter but it took 5 months to persuade my gp that was the problem, frustrating as she literally improved over night when we finally got it. She had acne on her face and used to literally scream in pain after bottles as well as very smelly loose bowel movements. For a long time we used aptimil colic and constipation (think that's what it was called) which did help a little along with gripe water. I was lucky to find a gp with a lactose intolerant daughter in the end

It could be dairy allergy - ask GP to prescribe neocate for 2 weeks. If eczema clears, then you'll know it's the culprit.

It's unlikely to be a lactose problem as there's lactose in breast milk and lactose intolerance usually gives tummy aches and not eczema.
