My DD 7's favourite food at the moment is crispy pancakes (which we allow once a week)we have just realised the connection but everytime she has eaten them her top lip swells up is this of concern? do you think if she ate something with a lot of whatever it is she is allergic to it could cause a more serious reaction?

could it be a reaction to monosodium glutamate?

I used to get something similar from tomatoes. I think as a general rule, if you can avoid allergens it is better to do so.

thanks will read whats in them was gonna let her have them for lunch one day this week and maybe take her to see the GP at our clinic or is that cruel?

hm, depends on your GP I guess. Will they be sure, if they dont know how she looks normally? Or is the swelling so huge that you cant miss it?

msg is in loads of savoury stuff like crisps etc, as flavour enhancer E471.
The other thing that is in crispy pancakes of course, is soy sauce, could it be that?

MSG is 621

My guess it's MSG too. Used in a great deal of food and imo another thing that should be banned.

whoops sorry a moment of numerical dyslexia.

tbh, my only doubt about MSG, was that it is so common. If devilsdaughters dd is showing a strong reaction from crispy pancakes and nothing else, then the rest of her diet must be very healthy!

whats 471 then?

threebob · 25/10/2006 09:31

Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids

Yum - stops cakes going stale.
