Allergy? Looking for lip balm without Lanolin.

DD1 has dreadful dry lips, and seems to have a permanent huge sore red area around her mouth that really irritates her. She is constantly slathering on lip balm, usually Carmex or Blistex, but it makes no difference.

The other day she had a dental appointment, and the dentist said it looked like an allergic reaction. Lightbulb moment! I honestly think she might be allergic to lanolin; she does have eczema tendencies and is allergic to cats, so it isn't impossible.

Unfortunately, every tube of lip balm in the house seems to contain lanolin. I am popping out tomorrow so will pick her up something, but are there any brands to look out for?

Lots of lip balms contain sweet almond oil - that's also a possibility.

DD uses Baby Lips after a very similar reaction to Vaseline lip balm. Vaseline balms contain sweet almond oil.

Burts Bees are pretty good and list all their ingredients on their website

Abody · 22/02/2015 19:45

Dr bronner is good, and you can get it from ASOS if you need next day delivery?

NannyR · 22/02/2015 19:48

Nivea lip butter doesn't seem to have lanolin in it, or how about just plain Vaseline?

CointreauVersial · 22/02/2015 21:10

Slug - my Burts Bees lip balm also contains lanolin, so that wasn't helping.

I've heard good things about Dr Bronner, so I'll have a look at that.

In the meantime she's decanted some Diprobase into a little pot. It'll do until tomorrow but it's a bit messy.

Paw paw ointment doesn't contain lanolin I think.

WerewolfBarMitzvah · 22/02/2015 21:31

I put some coconut oil in a small pot to use as lip balm. I have to scrape it out with my nail if it's cold, but I know what's in it, so it works for me.

Hope you find something - poor girl, sounds sore.

Snooksbury · 22/02/2015 21:45

Have you tried not using lip barm for a few weeks for her? Might be the simple answer

CointreauVersial · 22/02/2015 23:31

Ooh, coconut oil, I have some of that!

She has to use something - it's so dry and sore. She has braces at the moment, and I think that probably means her mouth doesn't close as well as it should (e.g while sleeping) so everything dries up, then she licks her lips and so on....

A tiny tub of Kleenex Lip Balsam? Small and flat enough to fit into a front jeans pocket, but unfortunately I can't see to read the list of ingredients. It usually to be found near the tissues for some reason.....".

We have to avoid petroleum here. Rosehip oil works for us.

CointreauVersial · 23/02/2015 18:09

Well, I spent a few minutes in the pharmacy today reading all the ingredients lists on the various lipbalms and we are going to try Neutrogena. The handcream is amazeballs so I have high hopes. No lanolin!

If that doesn't help, the next step will be to go for something stripped-down, maybe coconut oil.

Wow, unbelievable.

A few days with a lanolin-free lip balm and the inflamed red, sore lip area she's been battling with for months has almost entirely cleared up! All that Carmex was actually causing the problem, not curing it.

I'm just grateful the dentist mentioned allergy; it just didn't occur to me.

Anyway, happy DD.

Wow that's great news.
She must be delighted.
It would never occur to me either - it was good of the dentist to mention it.
Nice to get a happy ending to a thread!
