Hi. My dd is 17weeks old and has had colic with huge amounts of gas and frothy green poos since week 2. She was ebf till 7 weeks when she stopped gaining enough weight so has since had formula top ups. We tried gripe water, infacol and colief with no effect. Recently paediatricians diagnosed cows milk protein allergy and she was started on aptamil pepyi because she was losing weight and only sleeping 1.5hrs a nightbdue to gas pain. She got worse on this (but put on weight) so after 2weeks she started nutramigen lipil 5 days ago. For 3 days she gradually improved, but now is sore again and writhing about all night with diorrhoea, nappy rash, gas and gurgling stomach. Her eczema is slightly worse. Dieticians suggested neocate but I wondered if things could improve on nutramigen in which case I don't want to change formula again so soon. Dd still gets bf twice during day but because she is so sore she feeds badly as she ends up comfort sucking. I am totally dairy and soy free. So sorry for long post but my questions are:

  1. anyone had experience of nutramigen? Did things get worse before better?
  2. anyone had experience of neocate? Did this help even if nutramigen didn't?

Thanks (and sorry for the long post!)

Silent reflux?
My ds (6mo) has a CMPA and is on nutramigen.
We discovered this after he spent his first 4 weeks projectile vomiting over me, diagnosed with reflux, started on ranitidine.
It helped with the vomiting but he was still uncomfortable and trying to be sick all the time, then started the nutramigen..
He's now on nutramigen and ranitidine and he's a different baby.. My shout is silent reflux which is where they start bringing milk back up but swallow it again before they are sick meaning you can't see it, but it burns :(

My eldest was switched from end on dairy/soya free diet at 6 months and was great in nutramigen (proteins more broken down than apitmel pepti).
My youngest went into nutramigen at 6 weeks and even though I suspected he was having an reaction to it (still gassy and sore bottom) we had to battle my gp to get brocade - which he got at 17 weeks and was much easier to feed. He still had reflux though so struggled with that too.
Bith mine had a tongue tie and lip tie which can contribute to reflux.

Predictive text - I meant neocate

My DS had nutramigen - grown out of his dairy protein intolerance and still asks for it sometimes now at three and a half - weirdly he thinks it is delicious. Helped with his raw bottom and endless puking, I tried to carry on breast feeding while doing a diary free diet but only managed to do it for four months.

Oh, Mrs, when did your ds grow out of the CMPA? How did you know?!

Mushroomhead, i can't help too much with the neocate (although we were prescribed it in the end, he didn't take it and i was b/f so didn't push. I did have to give up dairy and soy, but also egg, nuts, and a few other things before he stopped vomiting/diarrhea. It took us a long time to get the official diagnosis, so i'd already figured that out before the neocate, hence i didn't bother changing. Just thought i'd let you know in case it's the b/feeding that is causing continued problems. If you're going to give the formula a try, it may be worth stopping the breastfeeding for a while so you know it's the formula, not the b/feeding that's the issue. DS2 used to vomit for a full 4 days each time i ate egg, and his eczema could take weeks and weeks to clear up if i ate something 'wrong'.

Thanks for the replies! We were changed to neocate which again seemed to help for a couple of days (I was very excited) but now she has become even more gassy and is upset and trumping all the time. She has been on it for 5days-if the wind is due to neocate does anyone have any experience of how long it takes to settle? Not sure I can watch her this uncomfortable if its unlikely to improve!

Bumping this for you OP - my one year old is dairy, egg, soya and possibly corn intolerant, and has been prescribed Nutramigen. It contains corn and drinking a couple of ounces a day (the most she has had thus far) has her gassy and uncomfortable all night.

I don't know whether to persist with it because it's something that will settle, or if the corn is bothering her.

Hope things settle for your LO soon

Both my girls had an instant change when switched to nutramigen. The screaming, projectile vomiting, and writhing in pain stopped the same day. Both had a few weeks of hideous nappies whilst clearing out their systems but they weren't bothered by it I was nearly passing out from the smell
