Coeliac and antibiotics

I was diagnosed as Coeliac through blood test and biopsy last year. I am Non-symptomatic and was only tested because I had a possibly related thyroid autoimmune disease.
I have been doing well with the gf diet but I recently had 5 days of antibiotics (Augmentin) for a sinus infection. For the whole time I was taking the antibiotics I was doubled up with pain in my left side and lower bowel area. I didn't have diarrhoea but I felt very sick and bloated. Since finishing the antibiotics three days ago the pains are gradually lessening.
Am I right in thinking there must be a correlation? I rang the GP who said that they can give some patients a dodgy tum and to stop taking them.
I have had Augmentin in the past and been fine but that was before I was totally gluten-free.
Has anyone else had this experience?

I'm not coeliac but have two coeliac children. I have been told by a pharmacist that some tablets (the 'capsule' sort) have gluten in the coating, so I always check with any medicine that there is no gluten in it (I ask the pharmacist to confirm). Were your antibiotics in liquid or capsule form? I would double-check with the pharmacist about this. The 'bloated' feeling/look is a very "coeliac" symptom, rather than just a tummy upset feeling IMO. As I'm sure you know, once you've gone gluten-free you are usually much more sensitive to gluten, though five days is a short time so not sure how "gluten-free" your body would be by then - it took my eldest son 2.5 years of being gluten-free before his body finally cleared itself of antibodies!

It could be gluten in the tablets (does the leaflet that came with them say anything?). The other thing is your gut is sensitive so the antibiotics killing off the good bacteria in your gut could be making you worse. It's worth trying a probiotic to redress the balance.
