holidays abroad with nut allergy

Hello, I'm going to post in the travel section too for more general advice but was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on where to travel in Europe for a summer holiday with child who has nut allergy? He is 5 and has a peanut allergy, seems relatively mild so far-we use piriton if needed and do not have an epipen. So was wondering if any countries are generally safer for peanut allergy sufferers? I know we would need to print allergy cards and take care like we do at home…. Feeling a bit daunted about taking him abroad for 1st time though so any advice appreciated. We would plan to go self catering I think but it would be nice to be able to eat out at times.
If anyone has specific recommendations of villas/apartments etc that'd be great. We have a 2 year old too.
Thanks

Hi there. We go to Italy. Pretty good overall but DD did have a severe reaction there one year. Cakes and biscuits are pretty much out in Italy and France, lots of nuts. But pizza/pasta/meat is all good.

Get an EHIC card.
Know what do in case of a reaction.
Make sure your travel insurance covers him.

Personally I would go gently, try self catering and bring some packets of sweets and biscuits with you as that is where you will struggle.

I agree. Go and enjoy. DD2 has a peanut allergy. We've been self-catering to Portugal and France with absolutely no problems. I don't let her have cake / biscuits when out.

Not a country recommendation but just wanted to check that you are aware that you can request that your flight is a nut-free one/

I'm not sure at what point you ask but I know that when we flew with Ryanair over Christmas they made an announcement on the plane explaining that they wouldn't be selling peanut products and asking any passengers with their own food not to consume any that contained peanuts.

Thanks so much for the replies…It has made me more confident about going overseas with the whole allergy side of things. Now just need to decide on a country and accommodation….if anyone has any specific recommendations it's be appreciated! Thanks

We've been to menorca several times, it's been fine. Just be careful when buying drinks, as they often bring a complementary bowl of peanuts out. Once there must have been some contamination because my daughter reacted with hives (she didn't touch the nuts, the barman maybe left traces on her glass when he picked it up). But Piriton given quickly worked.

When we go back this year I'll be asking them not to give us nuts when I order the drinks.
