Gluten free, before and after

Spybot · 23/01/2015 15:11

Hello. I am going to try gluten free next week to see if it has any positive effects on me. Could you share what symptoms you had before going gluten free and how you feel and what symptoms have disappeared after giving it up. This question probably does not apply to sufferers of coeliac disease as I know that is far more extreme than just intolerence. Thanks!

Before: stomach pains
After: no stomach pains

So it was fairly simple in my case.

CameliousHumph · 23/01/2015 15:42

Before ' diarrhoea every day. 5 or 6 times. Once a week not getting to loo in time. Gut pains. Shocking wind.

After. None of the above except wind. But that depends on how many beans/lentils I've eaten.

DareGreatly · 23/01/2015 15:48

I'm considering going gluten free to see if it helps my eczema and hayfever - and possibly for fertility too!

So watching with interest.

DareGreatly · 23/01/2015 19:10

Giving this a bump!

DareGreatly · 23/01/2015 21:17

And one more! Smile

claraschu · 23/01/2015 21:20

Not eating wheat makes my husband less bloated, windy, and less runny poo. We haven't really tried to be strictly gluten free, but getting rid of wheat had made a big difference.

sunnyfrostyday · 23/01/2015 21:22

Before - stomach pain, swelling, constipation.

After - no pain. All normal.

fedupandfeelingold · 23/01/2015 21:24

Hello palmoplantar pustulosis / psoriasis
Good bye!!!!!

PrimalLass · 23/01/2015 21:31

Stomach doesn't look 6 months pg, purple streaks under my eyes have gone.

DareGreatly · 23/01/2015 21:38

Yay - responses!

PrimalLass that's very interesting. I have purpleness under eye issues.

I take it by your username you're a Mark's Daily Apple fan? How easy do you find it to stick to?

magicstar1 · 23/01/2015 21:38

Before: brain fog, constant tiredness

After: clear head, more energy

DareGreatly · 23/01/2015 21:39

Fedup that's also great news re psoriasis!

DareGreatly · 23/01/2015 21:40

Oh yes - put me down for brain fog too. Feeling inspired and hopeful now! puts biscuit down

meglet · 23/01/2015 21:42

before; wretched IBS. used to stomach pain and bloating most days. off work sick every so often.

after; hardly ever have stomach pain. flatter stomach. immune system seems to be more robust.

DareGreatly · 23/01/2015 22:03

What's not to love!

Do you all find sticking to quite easy? Any particular cookbooks you'd recommend?

PrimalLass · 23/01/2015 23:20

I find GF easy, but not primal. I reg'd with MN when I was really into reading all the paleo sites.

My DD is 6 and gluten intolerant. I can tell just by looking at her sideways and at her under eyes whether she has had wheat.

DareGreatly · 23/01/2015 23:22

Ah well still a good username! That's interesting - I'm definitely going to make a concerted effort re GF after these good reports.

ChickenMe · 26/01/2015 01:01

Hi
Bumping thread a bit but how did you get on?
I suspect I have non-Coeliac gluten intolerance.
Interestingly much more common if you're of Irish heritage (I am).
For me it's mainly acid reflux-to the point of vomiting in my mouth and at one point coming out of my nose. Yuck. If I give up gluten it goes.
Weirdly its bread/pastry/cake/biscuit that's the main culprit. Things like batter, pasta or beer aren't as bad.

DareGreatly · 26/01/2015 07:03

Hi chicken I don't think the OP ever came back, but I'd like to know too.

Strangely, I'm of Irish heritage too! (Half) Beer gives me rhinitis-like symptoms. I get very very stuffy. Which is a shame!

Spybot · 26/01/2015 17:59

Hi all, still here. I'm meant to be trying gluten free but may not manage it this week due to other issues. I have some symptoms that I would like to get rid off but they may not be gluten related at all, including eczema. Daregreatly - The rhinitis thing is interesting and lucky that you've worked out what causes it instead of suffering through.

If your gut is struggling with gluten, the effects come out in all sorts of ways, in my case, thrush, mouth ulcers, in DS1's, ear infections within 24 hours, in DS2, vomiting, liquid bowels, eczema, asthma (but he has multiple intolerances so not always possible to match symptoms to cause if food has yeast and dairy in it too). In the case of other people I know, chronic fatigue, endometriosis, IBS, fertility issues. Probably best to consult a professional if you can because your gut may need support to recover and there may be temporary intolerances to other foods you need to exclude to allow your gut to heal.

DareGreatly · 26/01/2015 19:47

Yes...am also taking probiotics too (when I remember) for the whole gut healing thing!

cozietoesie · 27/01/2015 23:42

Before - Restless Leg Syndrome and sleep problems.

After - RLS gone and sleeping like a top.

(Those are the ones I've noticed particularly - there may be others.)

iamEarthymama · 27/01/2015 23:51

Before I was so tired all the time, poorly stomach, headaches, depression, really bad depression, brain fog, sick of life.
After I am more energised, more enthusiastic, happier, more effective,

I can tell if I eat gluten, as can DW.
Last time I was saying I was the most useless of all people and didn't know why I bothered people in any way, she said, .....what have you eaten? And she was right.
Hope everyone if managing to be GF and enjoying their food.( we have Leon Fast Vegetarian which is full of wonderful GF recipes)
