Milk protein intolerance -a few questions

Ds (5weeks old) has been poorly recently, after multiple trips to the gp and then finally to the hospital I was told I saw a consultant and was told that I was overfeeding him. Ds was feeding every 1-2 hours so I was told he had to go 3 hours imbetween feeds Hmm this has been difficult but I have made it. I was told if he doesn't improve it's possibly a milk protein intolerance and he will have to go on nutramigen. Firs day he improved loads, then got worse, then better, now slightly worse so have booked an appt at drs tomorrow to get his prescription (I have been told they will prescribe it)

Just wanted to ask anyone of their experiences with the milk intolerance.

What symptoms did dc have?

I have been told there is a big difference in the taste of the milk, how well do they adapt to it?

How long until you see a difference in them?

Does it affect weaning/what they eat when they are older?

Anything else I need to know about it?

My son was diagnosed with cmpi at about 5 weeks too.

Like yours he was frantically feeding every 1.5-2 hours 24 hours a day. He also had reflux which i was told is quite common in babies with cmpi so each feed was preceded and followed by screaming. He seemed to be in absolute agony... Arching his back along with the screaming.

His poo was weird... It looked like bright greeny yellow cottage cheese (sorry that's gross!). Neither the doctor not the midwife was interested in the disgusting poo but happy as long as he was pooing .

I was also told that the screaming and mad feeding was 'normal' and basically made to feel like a neurotic mother Angry.

It was the day that he screamed for 4 hours straight that I took him to a&e and demanded to see someone that I finally got the diagnosis. They also did a tummy x-ray and he was impacted (despite his one alien poo a day).

He was started on Nutramigen, gaviscon & ranitidine immediately and kept in hospital over night for observation.

He started to improve immediately. Within about a week he was a changed baby. I'll spare you the details of his 'clear out' ShockConfused.

Nutramigen is disgusting. It stinks and although my ds seemed to like it from the start I was told it's not uncommon for babies to be reluctant to drink it. It also makes their poo green and REALLY stinky.

It's a lot thinner than normal formula which is why gaviscon was added - as thickener to help keep it down to help with the reflux.

On the advice of a dietician we began to very slowly introduce dairy after weaning. I don't remember the age we started but I think around 1 in foods where it was a small ingredient and cooked. He was on a "normal" diet by about 18 months old. It was quite a long process but I'm really glad that he did outgrow it.

Hope that helps Grin even if it is an essay!

Lol! My DS had the (um) blockage from being unable to digest the milk properly...

But his poo WAS watery around the curdy bits... Jeez this is a disgusting conversation to be having on a Monday afternoon (not in UK at the moment) Grin!

I highly recommend jumping on Facebook to join the 'CMPA Support for Weaning' group. Loads of mums in your situation and can support/give advice.

Cheers
