Advice please on use of steroid creams on 6 month old with eczema

My son developed seems at 3 months old. We've applied steroid creams (hydrocortisone 0.5%) twice before, the first twice daily for 5 days then once daily for 5 days; the 2nd once daily for 5 days. The eczema subsides while cream is used but comes back with a vengeance after. Are we doing wrong? How do you apply the cream and for what duration each time? Also, eczema is on his face and neck. Many thanks for any insight!

Reading with interest. DD has a persistent patch of excema on one cheek plus various other places. I have now discovered which gp gives best/,worst advice! I had similar worries re steroids but have been reassured.

Can I ask which Aveeno cream is best? There seem to be various creams and lotions. I am going to google exmega!

If scratching is an issue (my DD often wakes with horrible scratch down her face) Scratchsleeves are good - like a little cotton bolero card I with sewn up hands. It does have a hint of 'one flew over the cuckoos nest' about it but does help Smile

There's an Aveeno eczema therapy cream in Amazon, but I've not tried it. Now an Adetma Exomega fan... Grin

Thought I would provide an update...

Now on week 3 of steroid hc. Doctor has prescribed 1% hc for use on body only. The patch on his cheek had almost disappeared last week only for the doctor to tell yes it was fine to stop the anti-b.... But once we stopped the patch just got larger and larger, plus started to infect surround skin too.. So 6 days after we stopped fusidin, we've restarted again to try to get that patch back down. Hopefully no resistant staph a as a result of stopping / starting. Hmm

But the exomega cream is very good indeed, and have also got my scratch sleeves order done. Eczema still persisting on armpits, neck and cheek, so will just keep on with the steroids until it's completely gone then taper down.

Thank you so much for your advice,I'm in a completely different mental state now compared to when I first posted. Some Light at end of tunnel is visible....!

Rainbow, to me that doesn't sound strong enough. I think gps are often quite reluctant to prescribe steroids.

My son was prescribed 0.5 Elocon for ointment for body, and 2.5 HC ointment for face (apparently ointment better than cream, not least because it stays on better) by top eczema consultant. GP had only supplied 0.5 HC cream for face, so a massive difference. It took under a week to clear up.

I had the same experience. You may need to push for stronger steroid. YY to ointment.

My baby had terrible bleeding eczema when he was tiny. It only cleared when we saw a dermatologist privately. GPs are too afraid of steroids in my experience. We also found that it would start to clear with a steroid cream but then would come back even worse as soon as we stopped. Modern steroids are not as bad as they used to be and are safe for long term use. My boy still has his applied once a day.
To clear up the initial bad flare up the dermatologist had us bathe DS in plain water twice a day then apply the steroid. We also had to
Moisturise at every nappy change with 50/50 lotion.

Thanks! Have another appointment with gp later today and will ask....
