DD just diagnosed with Ceoliacs and we are still waiting to see dietitian. Can anyone tell me if its ok to eat things (crisps in this case) which are gluten free but the packaging says prepared in factory which also handles gluten? Thanks

I think it is probably best to avoid anything like that to be honest. I'm waiting to hear from my dietician too but from what I gather you need to be strict and even cut out oats for 6-12 months.

I have found loads of useful Facebook groups for Coeliac and Parents of Coeliacs. Feel free to PM if you want any suggestions etc.

Pom Bears, some Kettle crisps and Seabrook are gluten free!

Thanks, will check them out. Also have to be dairy free, just to complicate things further!

Time will tell how sensitive they will be. Some of the Aldi /Asda/tesco/Sainsburys own brand are gluten free

ilovepowerhoop · 18/12/2014 19:04

seabrooks crisps are also labelled gluten free

ilovepowerhoop · 18/12/2014 19:04

ready salted should be ok

Thank you - it's a whole new complicated world for us so all these suggestions are great.

If you join coeliac UK you can download the app that lists all the safe foods. Very handy when you're getting started.

It is a whole new world but you get used to it. Smile

We're in same situation and do not let DD eat those things. Will revisit in future once we know how sensitive she is.

Thanks, Coeliac UK looks like a great resource

Coeliac UK's directory tells you which products are ok to eat - some which have 'produced in a factory where gluten is handled' on the label are fine, some are not.

Walkers crisps used to be gluten free but they've changed their labelling now - I'm pretty sure that even their ready salted crisps say they're not suitable for coeliacs now.

Sainsbury's, Tesco's and Asda own brand ready salted and cheese and onion crisps are ok. Salt and vinegar ones you have to be careful with...Tyrrells are ok.

Coeliac UK also have an app which includes a scanner, so you can scan thebar codes of food in the shops to check them. Doesn't have everything but can be handy
