Cakes made in a nut-free environment?

Hi all

I want to take a birthday cake in to school for my soon-to-be-5-yo. I called the school and they've said only one labelled as made in a nut-free environment is acceptable. I've had a look and everything in the shops seems to say that they're made in a factory that handles nuts, even if they're labelled nut free.

Any suggestions?

Not very helpful but I'm sure most things have thise disclaimers on nowadays, it is a pain. I can't really offer any advice as don't know any labeled ones that are definitely nut free. Only thing I could sugguest is to perhaps look in the free from Isle in supermarkets. If you have a tesco near you they usually have a bigger section for this than other supermarkets. Good luck.

Just Love Food Company's cakes are all nut free as is anything by Fabulous Bakin' Boys (though this is due to change next year )

Is home made acceptable? I have a severe nut allergy and get really frustrated with manufacturers saying 'can't guarantee nut free'

Is this for your son or for someone else who has a nut allergy?

If it's for someone else, you need to know that very few cakes will have that precise information on. It's more a case of not having nuts in ingredient list/may contain warning/traces warning/unsuitable for nut allergy sufferers warning.

NB The free-from aisle is often worse than useless - tends to be focused on gluten-free. Nuts are gluten-free.

I would look for a sponge cake from a big manufacturer as being the best bet, then keep the packaging. Quite tricky.

It was for a boy in my son's class with a nut allergy.

I couldn't find a cake that didn't have a label saying it was made in a nut free environment. I checked with the class teacher, who said 'nut-free' was fine, and the boy with the allergy had his own treat box. I don't know where the office had got the idea that it needed to have such a specific label, but apparently that wasn't true.

So just a standard supermarket cake with 'nut free' went in and all was fine.
