MMR Single Vaccines/Egg Allergy/De-Sensitizine Programmes

We were refused the Mumps Vaccine at a private hospital today as it's cultured on Chick Embryo's due to DS's egg intolerance and I was wondering if anyone else had any experiences to share. We'd previously discussed DS's single vaccine's with our consultant who said there was no danger with single vaccines and he was pro-MMR and said that the egg would cause no problems. We met the woman who runs the hospital and she said DS was at risk of 'collapsing' if he had MMR and that she recommended their de-sensitizing program where small quanities of the allergen would be introduced over a morning and then the single vaccine could be administered the same day. She also said that DS's nut and dairy allergies could be dealt with too. Has anyone tried it? I can't believe its this simple to 'cure' allergies? The private hospital in question is North of London and quite well-known and other mumsnetters have had their children immunised there as it's been mentioned on other single vaccine threads. We have a meeting with our consultant this week so I'll be raising it with him anyway but I was interested to know if anyone had any experience of this?
Thanks

Can't comment on the desensitizing programme, but my dd is allergic to egg and has had MMR with no effects. It depends whether your child is allergic to all egg (including in biscuits, for example - what they call 'altered' egg), or just to, for eg, scrambled egg. My dd is the latter, and therefore had no prob with the MMR vaccine. We did see the consultant though and it was recommended that she have it at hospital so they could deal with any probs if anything had happened. It didn't, and she's fine.

my ds ia allergic to eggs and nuts.THe gp and hv have so far refused to give mmr at surgery and we are awaiting instructions from allergy consultant.

He is 19 months now ,we have just decided to go ahead with the mmr hence the delay.

Have not heard about this desensitizing, sounds to good to be true, why are we all not offered this?
Let us know if it cures the allergy!
My dd had mmr at hospital because of egg allergy, she was the same as lalaa's dd and only allergic to uncookedish eggs IYKWIM.
Myds is severely allergic so am unsure what will happen.

My Ds1 has nut and egg white allergy and has has measles and rubella jabs seperatly from Direct Health 2000. I phi=oned them concerning his egg allergy and after talking with a nurse their she said that as DS1's allergy was to raw egg white and he was fine with quiches and well cooked scrambles aggs etc, the mumps vaccine was still recommended. However, I was advised to tell staff wen we go to the appomnitment just so as they are aware and keep an extra eye on him for 20 minutes after the jab to be on the safe side. THat way he is surrounded my doctors IF he did have an adverse reaction.

Thanks everyone that's great and really helpful especially those links RobinW. As I suspected when we saw our consultant he confirmed that there was no risk to our DS in having the Mumps vaccine (or MMR), his allergy is to Raw egg like you Starry and it's just not an issue. His view is that the de-sensitizing program is a load of cobblers, potentially extremely dangerous and they are just trying to make money out of vulnerable families!

Know I'm a bit late, but we are having ds's mmr done in hospital in a few weeks as he is severely egg allergic. The info I've read (including that link, thanks RobinW) all suggest it's fine but better to be safe than sorry. Will let you know cocococo if we have any problems but I'm sure we will all be fine. Better than them getting mumps, is my view....

I would like to read the links posted by RobinW but her messages have been withdrawn. Can anyone help out?

My ds had mmr with no probs and is allergic to all eggs. Have been told the only one to never give is flu shot.

jabberwocky · 10/09/2005 00:32

MN may still be able to forward a CAT to her. She is quite knowledgable about allergies. If they can't CAT me and I'll see what I can do.

jabberwocky · 10/09/2005 00:32

That should read

"If they can't, CAT me, and I'll see what I can do.

When desensitisation was tried for nut allergy some of the participants died. That was despite the programme being carried out in hospital with full resus facilities. I would be extremely suspicious of anyone offering desensitisation for nut allergy.

If you have no joy elsewhere I'll do a search on MMR/egg.

calvemjoe · 18/09/2005 21:55

My ds is allergic to all egg. He had the mmr and suffered a mild reation, but my hv said the vaccine is now cultivated on the chick and no longer contains any egg protein. Afterwards I found out they had had a 'crash' team on stand by and was really angry. I asked her why he had a reaction at all if the vaccine contains no egg protein.
as far as de-sensitizing goes, I thought the more egg he was exposed to the worse his allergy got?

ChicPea · 20/09/2005 00:43

My DS is allergic to egg (scrambled, freshly cooked in cake if he touches it and won't even eat anything with egg now) and had the singles jabs at St Johns & Eliz without any reaction except for a temperature on the eve of the Measles jab. The hospital said that they could refer me to a doctor who does the Measles jab which is not cultivated on a chick's embryo but I decided against that.
