Re-introduction of previously known allergy

How did you feel about it?

DS is almost two. After skin tests at four months, we found out he was allergic to eggs, peanuts and sesame. Since then the GP took us more seriously in January last year he had 21 skin prick tests which showed he was still allergic to eggs and sesame but no longer allergic to peanuts but now almonds specifically. So still, nuts. I mentioned he'd showed a reaction to something in a curry I'd made and maybe it was the coconut. The doctor told me to wipe his hands and inner mouth with fresh coconut and see what happened. I did and he came up in welts on his hands and swollen lips. From that time I've stayed away from coconut.

So today, nine months later and just out of interest, I wiped more fresh coconut on his hands - no reaction. I can't get near his mouth because he's being awkward but will do so as soon as I can. It would be amazing if he's not allergic to coconut anymore - we used to use it so much: oil, milk, flour etc. But in some ways I'm really apprehensive - I feel like it's been a year of conditioning to keep him away from coconut - changing our complete cooking approach, checking labels, cleaning my hands and mouth if I have any...

If he doesn't show any reaction in his mouth, I'll go really slow with re-introducing but I feel so worried!

I understand this stress! DS has outgrown 5 of his allergies in the last year and it still somehow feel 'wrong' feeding him those foods, but i am gradually getting used to it. Best advice is to take it slowly, start with tiny amounts then work up over a few weeks.

Good luck xx
