Allergic reaction to fruit?

HexBramble · 14/09/2014 16:55

In the last month, I've had similar reactions to a nectarine, last week a plum, and today a cherry.

I take a few bites then very quickly the sensation in my mouth changes. Itches, and becomes sore, and my throat must swell a tiny but (and I mean a tiny bit) and while I have no problem breathing, my swallowing is different - uncomfortable.

What is this?

Oral Allergy Syndrome.

It's the most common allergy in adults. Common in people who get spring hay fever (tree pollen)

I've had that for years. It's annoying and means I can't eat nectarines, cherries or peaches which I love. Also certain nuts - hazelnuts and almonds mainly. Peanuts are ok! If anyone has any ideas of how to get rid of it would like to hear them Grin

Oral allergy sysyndrome, I get it with some fruits and with peanuts. Still eat them though.

i get it from eating raw tomatoes ,
an antihistamine helps
but i avoid them now,

My daughter has this, she doesn't get it if she has taken an antihistamine

I developed an allergy to kiwi fruit as an adult with the symptoms you describe. Sounds like you have developed food allergies too.

ooh I had this last week with a peach. never had it before, also have suddenly got tree pollen hayfever. thought it strange to get this at 45 as I have never suffered with either before !

HexBramble · 14/09/2014 19:21

You lot are amazing!
Thanks!

I developed tree pollen hay fever about 6 years ago and this oral thing is a new one for me although I have been bothered by certain nut allergies now and again. I'll keep an anti histamine in my purse at all times now I think.

11 years ago, I had an idiopathic anaphylactic attach which saw me 2 days in hospital. Testing revealed nothing - a mystery source, do wherever I get unexplained itching etc, I tend to take notice.

Will this oral reaction get worse over time?

It shouldn't do, mine hasnt and consultant said it was ok to still eat the stuff that causes it. It's not like anaphylaxis, it's your body mistaking the food for pollen you are allergic to or something.., Dr explained it better.

Do mention it to your gp though.
