Hi

The Allergy Show email lists are designed to give people another reason to visit the show in addition to the 100 or so exhibitors and the 30 free seminars. The lists are designed to help visitors to arrange to meet other people in the same boat - either allergy sufferers or parents of kids with allergies and also to share experiences.

Yes, the lists are a marketing tool to encourage people to come to the show, and yes they will be kept going after the show has finished - apart from anything else they can be used to promote the Allergy Show 2005

How do I know? I'm the person running The Allergy Show.

Best
Jonathan

cocococo · 13/04/2004 21:51

how about some free tickets for mumsnet members then Jonathan in return for your free publicity on here!

Robin W - The show is aimed at people & families with eczema, asthma, hayfever and allergies. The Anaphylaxis Campaign are only one of many charities we are working with including The National Asthma Campaign, National Eczema Society... It's a show for anyone with these types of allergic conditions - not just for the minority with very severe allergies. If the show is as successful as it looks like being, then we may be able to run some regional events in 2005

CoCo... Thanks for your suggestion. I would be happy to put a two for one ticket offer up on the Mumsnet website if you can persuade the publishers to put it in a prominent place. Otherwise, advanced tickets cost only £6 from www.allergyshow.co.uk click here or by calling 0870 730 0142 (under 16s go free). We are running 30 free seminars with some of the top names in the allergy world such as Professor Stephen Holgate and Professor Jonathan Brostoff - I think that's pretty good value for £6.

insanidee · 18/04/2004 08:23

cant i just have a freebie ticket as i did post the original message?

nah only kidding, my kids have less serious allergies but still very distressing when they start to swell after insect bites, nettle rashes appear all over, piriton is my friend and more recently loratrine (sp??) has become useful.

jonathan · 29/04/2004 18:38

Insanidee - presumably you are the same person as Misdee

Send an SAE to

Looks like a fantastic show - I was just reading the list of speakers on the website. Come on mumsnet - why can't you accept the 2 for 1 ticket offer that's being offered.

Jonathan - I know quite a few mums in my NCT group would be interested - if you offered 2 for 1 ticket deal to the NCT - I bet they'd bite your hand off.

By the way - I saw your post on the Herbs for eczema thread - I can't believe that people on this site are so petty as to stop you posting helpful information that is of interest to mums.

Keep up the good work.

Jane

misdee · 08/05/2004 23:34

well said jane. just read that thread myself. feel bad for jonathan as i started this thread, and altho i will have gained a free ticket out of it, i have no links what so ever to the allergy show. apart from finding it very interesting and will be attending so i can find a way to help my dd's even more.

robin, i hate to say this, but how do u know jonathon hasnt paid his fee's? stop pulling him up about it, if u find it a problem then get it touch with mumsnet and they can speak to him about it, i dont belive its actually u're place to do this. sorry!

It is quite usual for mumsnetters to ask people with a commercial cause to push if they have contacted the mumsnet team first about paying for their advertising here. Most products/books/conferences connected with children and parenting you could classify as helpful. That doesn't mean someone is not making money of them, too.

I think Robin asked a fair question as this info is not under the media/non media requests topic. If it was, we would know that it has been seen by the mumsnet team.

NotsoplainJane · 09/05/2004 16:10

Well said Misdee. Robinw I think you should apologise to Jonathan for being so rude. His first post came after Misdee had already created a new thread about the allergy show. Robin, you then accused him of a "marketing ploy".

The way I read it, he posted to defend himself after being accused of sharp practice by a complete stranger.

His second post was in answer to your direct question, robin, about having shows outside of London. Perhaps you should have warned him that he had to answer your question without mentioning the allergy show.

His third post was in response to misdee's request for a free ticket, which he graciously agreed to.

Robin, please do us all a favour and let the guy answer some of our questions, not just yours.

I for one think the Allergy show is a great idea. Jonathan, if you haven't been put off this site forever, I'd like to congratulate you on it and ask you if there are any facilities for children at the show?

Jane

tigermoth · 09/05/2004 20:26

if you think this is rude, have you read some of the other media threads and mumsnet responses? I don't think robin needs to apologise for anything IMHO - her questions sound fine to me.

misdee, I hope you enjoy it and do hope mumsnet will offer 2 for the price of 1 tickets.

Wills · 09/05/2004 21:58

I too must come out in support of Robin. Like Tigermoth I don't think Robin meant to upset but it is good to check that Jonathan has checked with Mumsnet. They don't earn much money and although I haven't spoken to any of the mumsnet team recently I know that they have struggled to survive in the past.

I would however like to ask Jonathan a question myself. I, for one, have found that in recent years companies have used allergies as a marketing ploy and as a way of putting the price up, for example rather than being able to buy special nut trace free bread why can't companies simply stop using peanut oil to oil the machines! I've looked at the site and although I haven't looked in great depth one concern I have had is that I will be "sold to" rather than given facts. Let me give you an example. No matter how good a vacuum cleaner might be at picking up allergens it will never ever match the benefits of having wooden/stone/tiled flooring - will this come across???? I am interested in attending but a little bit cynical at the mo.

hmmmm.. read it again and still can't see what the problem is, really. If you're running a business it's hardly a big insult to be asked if you've adopted a marketing ploy.

tigermoth · 10/05/2004 09:41

wills - I think your last paragraph is very interesting.

tamum · 10/05/2004 17:19

I too can't see anything wrong with Robin asking about fees, and she wasn't being rude, I didn't think.

Strange that NotsoplainJane has only ever posted on this thread and in this manner- it's unusual for a new person to be quite so specific and confrontational.

Wills · 10/05/2004 21:53

Oh tamum, good point.....

Tigermoth - possibly I'm just an incredibly cynical person but... Luckily I'm the only one in the family with serious allergies (chronic asthmatic and serious allergy to brazil nuts etc) but both my dds are showing symptons so I'm always trying to stay abreast of current guidelines on how to prevent allergies from developing. I can't help but feel recently that I'm being marketed to. Of course in some ways this is a relief because at least you can now get "nut free food" but it is frustrating as the real route here should be to cut out the wide use of nut oil in our foods. I'll get off my soap box now - sorry

I have to agree with Wills and robinw about being cynical about the show. The exhibitors list includes lots of snake oil salesmen ("This will cure what ails ya'!" ).

But if I could, I'd go and collect freebies -- I'm a sucker for stuff like that!

Wills · 11/05/2004 08:22

freebies? Oh well then, give me dates and a train pass .

Robinw - I'm rather ashamed to admit but since the birth of dd2 8 months ago I've not been so good at my research and reading the brilliant analphlyxis campaign brochures. However sounds interesting - please tell me more!!!!
