16 month old and peanut butter - advice please

my 16 month old has had peanut butter many times - the pediatrician recently told me she should not have it, or any nut based stuff because of allergies. My question is that now she has had it and shown no signs of problems do I need to take it out of her diet - is she likely to develop and allergy at this stage?

(didn't bring this up at drs because was too embarrassed - when discussing weaning with him a few months ago it was him who suggested i gave it to her!)

are there allergies in your family?

MrsApronstrings · 11/09/2006 18:59

Not of this sort - older children have a lactose thing going on ( but of the upset tummy sort not anaphlylactic(sp) ) 3 older children no one allergic to nuts/fish or anything

Hi MrsAS

If your family has a history of allergies, current guideline in the UK is not to give peanutbutter until 3 yrs. So my DS currently missing out. When my DD was being weaned, the guideline was 2 yrs for families with a history. For those with no such history, it is 1 yr. So you are safe BTW DD loves pb, so am glad her school lets her have it. They are careful about handwashing after such lunches as there are some allergic in her class.

My family history: I, my sister, brother, father, mother all are allegric to something though my dad the only one allegeric to a food item. My DH had asthma as a child outgrown at 10.

i'm confused by what "family history of allergies" means tbh.

i have occasional, small patches of eczema. MIL gets it on her hands. does this count?

I think the peanut butter risk only pertains to certain allergies (i.e. asthma). I hink Eczema is related to asthma, but I'mno sure if that means you need to avoid peanu butter.

I am American and you couldn't pry peanubutter away from me (or my kids). We love it!

Tutter, I think eczema counts as family history of allergies - has for us as my brother had exczema a bit and clinic were interested in it for my DS. All part of being 'atopic' with tendencies to asthma, allergies and ezcema.
Interestingly we've been told to avoid peanut till 7 not 3.

For family history I think a number of close relatives have to have something.
So I am allergic to feathers, have hay fever and some excema under stress
DH had asthma
My sister has Chrons (not a allergy but somehow fits in with it all) and had excema
My brother also had bad excema
My Dad allergic to nuts and cats
My mother allergic to bees and posin ivy.
DD had excema --but mostly gone

So quite a lot really in ours. I think it was the number of people with a related condidtion. BTW excema & asthma are linked as if you have one you are more likely to get other.

My DS was just diagnosed with asthma, so will have to check with dr about the peanuts ! He also has excema -- but mild.

Must admit DS is getting annoyed about not having PB -- I even have mine imported from the States as long as Mom is happy to do it
