Ds1 (7) has had this for over a year. We have tried various antihistamines but none work for thvery long. Does anyone else's dc have this?

Have you been able to work out the cause? It practically disappeared when we were on holiday in Cornwall for example.

Sounds like what I have; perennial allergic rhinitis. I've had skin prick testing done a couple of times which revealed I was allergic to house dust mites. Have tried lots of things, but generally just taking Loratadine 10mg as soon as I wake up helps. They're usually cheapest in Asda, always buy own-brand as so much cheaper than Piriton for example. If I don't take it within 10mins of waking then it's pointless taking anything

I still have 'bad nose days' where they don't seem to work though. It's very annoying - hope you can get a referral for your ds via your gp, and see what the root cause is.

Thanks Slinky - we have an appointment at the ENT later this month. Ds has been prescribed Loratadine but is only on 5ml as under 30kg, but it doesn't seem to be having any effect. We also use Beconase and have been prescribed steroids but don't want to go down that route due to side effects.

Does your reaction change when you are away from home? We live next to a railway and not far from a main road and we wondere if this might be making it worse

I've tried Beconase, Flixonase, Becotide, Cetirizine, saline nasal drops, and had a camera check for polyps. Nothing has worked I'm afraid. Was told to keep house super clean, use anti-allergy pillows and covers etc, damp dust as frequently as possible. Doesn't make any difference.

I've had it all my life and am now 33 (coincidentally I live on a busy main road and have a railway line at bottom of garden!). I've lived lots of different places and not noticed a big change. Even when I lived in Sydney and had no curtains or carpets (wooden floors and blinds).

Do you find he sneezes more when he has a sudden change of temperature? I do, but can't work out why.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Wish I'd taken out shares in Kleenex Ultra Balm tissues years ago! Wink

got the anti allergy duvet and pillow!

Seemed worse as has got warmere but have been closing their windows when we go to bed and that seems to have helped.

I don't think I'm aware if any changes in temperature we've had.

Does he have asthma or eczema too? I had asthma as a child but it got better as I got older, and has more or less been classed as dormant since my mid-late 20's.

The sneezing is pretty miserable; on a bad day mine is almost constant and I'm wiped out by 3-4pm. When I was pregnant with ds1 four years ago I was advised not to take anything which was crap.

It took years for me to get the perennial allergic rhinitis diagnosis, as in the winter GP's would tell me and my Mum I had a cold/virus, and in the summer they'd label it hayfever...but I genuinely have a drippy runny sneezy nose all year round.

cheminotte · 03/07/2014 10:08

No asthma or excema thankfully although both are in the family already. We were getting told hay fever last summer but it never went away so we went back to the doctors.
Is your railway line diesel or electric?

OP posts:
SlinkyB · 03/07/2014 21:41

Currently diesel but upgrading to high speed electric soon. We have freight, passenger and sometimes steam trains go by (rural town).

Hope the ENT appt goes well and you get to the bottom of it, or someone a lot more useful than me comes along to this thread soon.

wasacasa · 03/07/2014 21:44

I found Nasonex spray helped me. I've sneezed for years. Not sure if children can take it though

cheminotte · 05/07/2014 09:04

Thanks wasacasa - will investigate that.
Walking to school yesterday there were 3 lorries sat in the traffic jam and DS could not stop sneezing, so I think it must be pollution related.
